PROSTATE ULTRASOUND

(ECHOGRAPHY OF PROSTATE, TRANSRECTAL APPROACH)
Prostate Ultrasound

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

What do I need to know about a prostate ultrasound? A prostate ultrasound is a test that uses sound waves to look at your prostate. It can help healthcare providers diagnose a problem with your prostate. A prostate ultrasound does not expose you to radiation.

How do I prepare for a prostate ultrasound? Your healthcare provider will talk to you about the test. Your healthcare provider will have you empty your bowel with an enema about 1 hour before the test.

What will happen during a prostate ultrasound? You will lie on your side on a table. Your healthcare provider will insert a gloved finger into your rectum to find your prostate. He will remove his finger, then insert a device called a transducer. The transducer uses sound waves to make images of your prostate.
