What do I need to know about kidney tumor ablation? Kidney tumor ablation is a procedure to destroy cancer cells in your kidney. Your healthcare provider may use cold temperatures, radio waves, ultrasound, or medicine to treat small kidney tumors.

How do I prepare for kidney tumor ablation? Your healthcare provider will talk to you about how to prepare for the procedure. He may tell you not to eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of your surgery. He will tell you what medicines to take or not take on the day of your surgery.

What will happen during kidney tumor ablation? You will be given medicine to keep you calm, relaxed, and free from pain. Your healthcare provider will insert a needle and use an x-ray or ultrasound to guide a catheter to the tumor. He will then inject medicine or use cold temperatures, radio waves, or ultrasound to destroy the tumor.

What are the risks of kidney tumor ablation?Ablation may increase your risk for an infection or bleeding. It may also damage a part of the kidney or nearby tissue or organ.
