Dalfopristin (dal-foe-PRIS-tin), Quinupristin (kwin-ue-PRIS-tin) Treats infections caused by bacteria. Belongs to a class of drugs called antibiotics.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:
You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to quinupristin, dalfopristin, or similar medicines such as pristinamycin or virginiamycin.

How to Use This Medicine:
Injectable

  • Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it will be given.
  • Your medicine will be given directly into a vein, usually in your arm or chest. This is called intravenous (in-tra-VEEN-ous), or IV.
  • A nurse or other caregiver trained to give IV infusions will give your medicine.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Before using this medicine, tell your doctor if you are using cyclosporine, nifedipine (Procardia®), or midazolam (Versed®).

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you have liver disease before using this medicine.
  • If your infection does not improve, or if it gets worse while using this medicine, talk to your doctor.
  • If you have severe diarrhea while using this medicine, check with your doctor before taking medicine to stop the diarrhea.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Severe diarrhea (watery or bloody)
  • Swelling, pain, or redness near where your IV is located
  • Yellowing of your skin or eyes

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Mild rash or itching
  • Nausea and/or vomiting

If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
