WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: What do I need to know about rubber band ligation? Rubber band ligation (RBL) is an outpatient procedure to remove internal hemorrhoids. How do I prepare for RBL? Your healthcare provider will talk to you about how to prepare for the procedure. There is usually little to no preparation needed for this procedure. What will happen during RBL? You do not need any anesthesia or sedation for RBL. You should not feel pain during the procedure. You healthcare provider may insert an anoscope into your anus. An anoscope is a small tube with a camera and light on the end. He will insert a small tool to place a medical rubber band at the base of one or more hemorrhoids. The band will cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. The hemorrhoid and band will fall off and come out with your bowel movement in 5 to 7 days. You may feel a dull ache or feeling of pressure for up to 3 days after the procedure. What are the risks of RBL? You may bleed more than expected or develop an infection. You may have pain or swelling. The band may not be placed correctly. You may develop trouble urinating. |
