PENILE PROSTHESIS IMPLANTATION

(PENILE PROSTHESIS OPERATION)
Penile Prosthesis Implantation

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

What do I need to know about penile prosthesis implantation? Penile prosthesis implantation is surgery to place a penis implant. The implant makes it possible to have and maintain an erection.

How do I prepare for surgery? Your healthcare provider will talk to you about how to prepare for surgery. He may tell you not to eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of your surgery. He will tell you what medicines to take or not take on the day of your surgery.

What will happen during surgery? Your surgeon will make an incision in your penis and place the implant into the shaft of your penis. If you have an inflatable implant, the pump will be placed inside your scrotum and attached to the implant. A drain may be placed to remove extra blood or fluid from your surgery area. The incisions will be closed with stitches and covered with a bandage.

What are the risks of surgery? You may bleed more than expected or get an infection. Your prostate or bladder may be damaged during surgery. Your penis may not look the way you thought it would. You may have trouble urinating or have swelling or numbness in your penis. The implant may move out of place or not work properly. You may still have problems having an erection.
