USES/FORMS/SOURCES
The reaction with carbon dioxide in the air leads to its use in the manufacture of mortar, plaster, and whitewash (HSDB). Other uses include medicinal antacid, food additive, dehairing hides, and as a disinfectant (Clayton & Clayton, 1982; HSDB).
CALCIUM HYDROXIDE, also called HYDRATED LIME or SLAKED LIME, occurs as an odorless, colorless crystalline, soft granule, or white powder solid (HSDB). It is only slightly soluble in water (0.185 g/100 cc at 0 degrees C), but forms a highly alkaline solution (pH 12.4) (HSDB). This alkalinity is the source of its toxicity.

GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS

TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Calcium hydroxide can cause LIME BURNS of the eye. Clumps may lodge deep in the recesses of the eye, releasing calcium hydroxide over a long period of time (HSDB). SEVERE BURNS of the cornea with possible damage to the corneal nerves can occur (HSDB). In rabbits, eye damage was not reversible for at least three months (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Calcium hydroxide can also cause dermatitis and irritation of the mucous membranes (Sax, 1984). Lime dust, which can cause caustic skin ulcers, contains calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide (Farkas, 1981).
- Calcium hydroxide is formed when water is added to the dry materials of PORTLAND CEMENT. Wet cement is caustic and can produce third-degree alkali burns (Peters, 1984). Calcium hydroxide is considered to be the responsible agent for burns due to wet cement (Buckley, 1982).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Male rats given tap water containing 50 and 350 mg/L calcium hydroxide were restless and agressive and had a reduced food intake over 2 months of exposure. At 3 months, there was a loss in body weight, lowered blood counts, and decreased hemoglobin (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Calcium hydroxide given orally to rats altered sensitivity to electrically-induced seizures (HSDB).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
INHALATION EXPOSURE - INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm.
DERMAL EXPOSURE - EYE EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility.
ORAL EXPOSURE - DILUTION: If no respiratory compromise is present, administer milk or water as soon as possible after ingestion. Dilution may only be helpful if performed in the first seconds to minutes after ingestion. The ideal amount is unknown; no more than 8 ounces (240 mL) in adults and 4 ounces (120 mL) in children is recommended to minimize the risk of vomiting. Do not induce vomiting.

MAXIMUM TOLERATED EXPOSURE
Rats fed up to 350 mg calcium hydroxide/L tap water for 3 months experienced decreased erythrocyte and phagocyte counts, lower hemoglobin concentrations, and decreased body weight (Clayton & Clayton, 1981).

Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.

POTENTIAL FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARDS - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 154 (ERG, 2004) Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Some are oxidizers and may ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated.

EXPLOSION HAZARD
- Calcium hydroxide is not explosive under normal conditions.
However, it will cause explosive decomposition of maleic anhydride, as well as forming explosive products with nitroethane and water (HSDB , 1993).
DUST/VAPOR HAZARD
- Calcium hydroxide is caustic, and dust may irritate the skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract (ITI, 1988; ACGIH, 1991).
REACTIVITY HAZARD
- When mixed with acids, calcium hydroxide liberates a great deal of heat (ITI, 1988).
- When calcium hydroxide-potassium nitrate mixtures are heated with chlorinated phenols, chlorinated benzodioxins similar to the extremely toxic tetrachlorodibenzodioxin may be formed (Bretherick, 1990).
- The reaction of calcium hydroxide with polychlorinated phenols and potassium nitrate forms extremely toxic products (Lewis, 1992).
