USES/FORMS/SOURCES
The anhydrous form of calcium chloride is used as a drying as well as dehydrating agent for organic liquids and gases, and in desiccators (Budavari, 1989). The dihydrate and hexahydrate forms are used: for antifreeze and refrigerating solutions; in fire extinguishers, etc, (a 40% solution freezes at minus 41 degrees C); to preserve wood and stone; in the manufacture of ice, glues, and cements; fireproofing fabrics; automobile antifreeze mixtures; to melt ice and snow; as coagulant in rubber manufacture; in concrete mixes to give quicker initial set and greater strength; freezeproofing of coal and ores; dust control on unpaved roads; sizing and finishing cotton fabrics; to reduce the incidence of infection by Alternaria spp. on apples; and, as brine for filling inflatable tires on tractors to increase traction (Biggs et al, 1993; Budavari, 1989).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Calcium chloride is moderately toxic by oral, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous routes.
- Inhalation of calcium chloride causes irritation of the nose and throat. Ingestion causes irritation of mouth and stomach. Contact with eyes, particularly by dust, causes irritation and possible transient corneal injury. Contact of solid with dry skin causes mild irritation; strong solutions cause marked irritation or burns.
- Cases have been reported, among workers packing dry calcium chloride, of irritation accompanied by erythema and peeling of facial skin, lacrimation, eye discharge, burning sensation and pain in the nasal cavities, occasional nose bleeding and tickling in the throat. Cases of perforation of the nasal septum have also been reported.
- It is a questionable carcinogen with experimental tumorigenic data. Mutation data have also been reported for calcium chloride.
- The following information is for CALCIUM SALTS.
Acute single ingestions of calcium salts may produce mild gastrointestinal distress, but has not been reported to cause hypercalcemia or other toxic manifestations. Calcium chloride is more irritating and may cause hemorrhage. Chronic ingestion of calcium carbonate, 4 to 60 g/day for 2 to 30 days, may cause hypercalcemia, alkalosis, and renal impairment; there are no reports of hypercalcemia or other toxicity, in the case of acute ingestion. Calcium salts are irritating to the tissues when injected parenterally.

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance;give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

At the time of this review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices (HSDB , 1993).
