GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- There is very little information available about the potential human health effects of butyl vinyl ether. No human poisoning cases have been described.
- Butyl vinyl ether is mildly toxic by inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact.
- Ethers as a class of agents have anesthetic and irritant properties. Similar vinyl ethers (ethyl vinyl ether and isopropyl vinyl ether) have been shown to have anesthetic properties with CNS depression in experimental animals.
- Eye and dermal irritation may occur with exposure, and respiratory tract irritation may be predicted.

Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution.
-FIRST AID
FIRST AID AND PREHOSPITAL TREATMENT
INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm.
DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility.
PREHOSPITAL ACTIVATED CHARCOAL ADMINISTRATION Consider prehospital administration of activated charcoal as an aqueous slurry in patients with a potentially toxic ingestion who are awake and able to protect their airway. Activated charcoal is most effective when administered within one hour of ingestion. Administration in the prehospital setting has the potential to significantly decrease the time from toxin ingestion to activated charcoal administration, although it has not been shown to affect outcome (Alaspaa et al, 2005; Thakore & Murphy, 2002; Spiller & Rogers, 2002). In patients who are at risk for the abrupt onset of seizures or mental status depression, activated charcoal should not be administered in the prehospital setting, due to the risk of aspiration in the event of spontaneous emesis. The addition of flavoring agents (cola drinks, chocolate milk, cherry syrup) to activated charcoal improves the palatability for children and may facilitate successful administration (Guenther Skokan et al, 2001; Dagnone et al, 2002).
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL: Administer charcoal as a slurry (240 mL water/30 g charcoal). Usual dose: 25 to 100 g in adults/adolescents, 25 to 50 g in children (1 to 12 years), and 1 g/kg in infants less than 1 year old. Observe for central nervous system depression. Monitor vital signs. Maintain airway patency and oxygenation. Observe for possible gastrointestinal irritation, abdominal pain, or bleeding.

Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. All equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. A vapor suppressing foam may be used to reduce vapors. Absorb or cover with dry earth, sand or other non-combustible material and transfer to containers. Use clean non-sparking tools to collect absorbed material.

-ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD MANAGEMENT
POLLUTION HAZARD
- Butyl vinyl ether may be released to the environment as a result of its manufacture and use, including its use in the synthesis of copolymers (HSDB , 1992).
- Air: If butyl vinyl ether is released to the atmosphere, it will be expected to exist almost entirely in the vapor phase, based upon a reported vapor pressure of 51 mmHg at 25 degrees C. It will be susceptible to photo- oxidation via vapor phase reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals and ozone. It will not be expected to photolyze in the atmosphere (HSDB , 1992).
- Water: If butyl vinyl ether is released to water, it will not be expected to significantly adsorb to sediment or suspended particulate matter, bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms, or directly photolyze, based upon estimated physical-chemical properties or analogies to other structurally related aliphatic ethers (HSDB , 1992).
- Water: Butyl vinyl ether will be susceptible to appreciable hydrolysis in certain environmental waters, especially at acidic pH. In surface water, it will be subject to rapid volatilization.
- Water: It is not known whether butyl vinyl ether will biodegrade in environmental waters (HSDB , 1992).
- Soil: If butyl vinyl ether is released to soil, it will be subject to volatilization based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.24 x 10(-3) atm-m(3)/mole and vapor pressure of 51 mmHg at 25 degrees C. It will be expected to exhibit high mobility in soil and, therefore, it may leach to groundwater, based upon an estimated Koc of 53. Based upon data for hydrolysis in water, butyl vinyl ether may hydrolyze in soil, depending upon the pH. It is unknown whether butyl vinyl ether will biodegrade in soil (HSDB , 1992).
ENVIRONMENTAL FATE AND KINETICS
OTHER AIR An overall atmospheric half-life of 9 hours has been calculated for butyl vinyl ether at an atmospheric concentration of 5 x 10(5) hydroxyl radicals per cubic centimeter and 7 x 10(11) ozone molecules per cubic centimeter, based upon estimated rate constants (HSDB , 1992).
WATER Half-lives for hydrolysis of 9.5 hours, 40 days, and 10.9 years at pH of 5, 7, and 9, respectively, have been calculated for butyl vinyl ether from a reported acid catalyzed hydrolysis rate constant (HSDB , 1992).
