Boron tribromide is utilized in the manufacture of diborane, high-purity boron, and semiconductors (ACGIH, 1991; Budavari, 1989; Lewis, 1993).

GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Boron tribromide is highly toxic by inhalation and ingestion, and may cause severe burns of the eyes and skin. It is also very irritating to the mucous membranes.
- Symptoms of inhalation exposure include bronchospasm, extreme respiratory irritation, and noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. CNS depression, shock, seizures, coma, and death may also occur.
- Chronic exposure may cause anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss.

TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors, dusts or substance may cause severe injury, burns, or death. Reaction with water or moist air will release toxic, corrosive or flammable gases. Reaction with water may generate much heat which will increase the concentration of fumes in the air. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

SUMMARY
- FIRST AID - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 157 (ERG, 2004)
Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
FIRST AID EYE EXPOSURE - Immediately wash the eyes with large amounts of water, occasionally lifting the lower and upper lids. Get medical attention immediately. Contact lenses should not be worn when working with this chemical. DERMAL EXPOSURE - Immediately flush the contaminated skin with water. If this chemical penetrates the clothing, immediately remove the clothing and flush the skin with water. Get medical attention promptly. INHALATION EXPOSURE - Move the exposed person to fresh air at once. If breathing has stopped, perform artificial respiration. Keep the affected person warm and at rest. Get medical attention as soon as possible. ORAL EXPOSURE - If this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention immediately. TARGET ORGANS - Eyes, skin, and respiratory tract (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 2007).
GENERAL - Move victims of inhalation exposure from the toxic environment and administer 100% humidified supplemental oxygen with assisted ventilation as required. Exposed skin and eyes should be copiously flushed with water. Because of the potential for rapid onset of CNS depression or seizures with possible aspiration of gastric contents, EMESIS SHOULD NOT BE INDUCED. Cautious gastric lavage followed by administration of activated charcoal may be of benefit if the patient is seen soon after the exposure.
INHALATION EXPOSURE - INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm. If bronchospasm and wheezing occur, consider treatment with inhaled sympathomimetic agents. ACUTE LUNG INJURY: Maintain ventilation and oxygenation and evaluate with frequent arterial blood gases and/or pulse oximetry monitoring. Early use of PEEP and mechanical ventilation may be needed. SEIZURES: Administer a benzodiazepine; DIAZEPAM (ADULT: 5 to 10 mg IV initially; repeat every 5 to 20 minutes as needed. CHILD: 0.1 to 0.5 mg/kg IV over 2 to 5 minutes; up to a maximum of 10 mg/dose. May repeat dose every 5 to 10 minutes as needed) or LORAZEPAM (ADULT: 2 to 4 mg IV initially; repeat every 5 to 10 minutes as needed, if seizures persist. CHILD: 0.05 to 0.1 mg/kg IV over 2 to 5 minutes, up to a maximum of 4 mg/dose; may repeat in 5 to 15 minutes as needed, if seizures continue). Consider phenobarbital or propofol if seizures recur after diazepam 30 mg (adults) or 10 mg (children greater than 5 years). Monitor for hypotension, dysrhythmias, respiratory depression, and need for endotracheal intubation. Evaluate for hypoglycemia, electrolyte disturbances, and hypoxia.
DERMAL EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contaminated clothing and jewelry and place them in plastic bags. Wash exposed areas with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes with gentle sponging to avoid skin breakdown. A physician may need to examine the area if irritation or pain persists (Burgess et al, 1999). Treat dermal irritation or burns with standard topical therapy. Patients developing dermal hypersensitivity reactions may require treatment with systemic or topical corticosteroids or antihistamines.
EYE EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility.
ORAL EXPOSURE - Because of the potential for gastrointestinal tract irritation or CNS depression and seizures, do not induce vomiting. Significant esophageal or gastrointestinal tract irritation or burns may occur following ingestion. The possible benefit of early removal of some ingested material by cautious gastric lavage must be weighed against potential complications of bleeding or perforation. GASTRIC LAVAGE: Consider after ingestion of a potentially life-threatening amount of poison if it can be performed soon after ingestion (generally within 1 hour). Protect airway by placement in the head down left lateral decubitus position or by endotracheal intubation. Control any seizures first. ACTIVATED CHARCOAL: Administer charcoal as a slurry (240 mL water/30 g charcoal). Usual dose: 25 to 100 g in adults/adolescents, 25 to 50 g in children (1 to 12 years), and 1 g/kg in infants less than 1 year old. Observe patients with ingestion carefully for the possible development of esophageal or gastrointestinal tract irritation or burns. If signs or symptoms of esophageal irritation or burns are present, consider endoscopy to determine the extent of injury. SEIZURES: Administer a benzodiazepine; DIAZEPAM (ADULT: 5 to 10 mg IV initially; repeat every 5 to 20 minutes as needed. CHILD: 0.1 to 0.5 mg/kg IV over 2 to 5 minutes; up to a maximum of 10 mg/dose. May repeat dose every 5 to 10 minutes as needed) or LORAZEPAM (ADULT: 2 to 4 mg IV initially; repeat every 5 to 10 minutes as needed, if seizures persist. CHILD: 0.05 to 0.1 mg/kg IV over 2 to 5 minutes, up to a maximum of 4 mg/dose; may repeat in 5 to 15 minutes as needed, if seizures continue). HANDLING
- Boron tribromide is stable during transport ((CHRIS, 1996)).
- Broken packages are only to be handled by persons wearing appropriate protective equipment (AAR, 1994).
- According to 49 CFR 171.2: "No person may /transport,/ offer or accept a hazardous material for transportation in commerce unless that material is properly classed, described, packaged, marked, labeled, and in condition for shipment as required or authorized by.../the hazardous materials regulations (49 CFR 171 to 177)" (HSDB , 1996)
STORAGE
- ROOM/CABINET RECOMMENDATIONS
Store boron tribromide in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location (NFPA, 1994). Storage temperature should be ambient ((CHRIS, 1996)). Pressure-vacuum venting is to be utilized ((CHRIS, 1996)).
Keep this compound separated from alcohols, alkalies, alkali metals, ethers, oxidizers, phosphorus, and wood (NFPA, 1994).

Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.
- Appropriate protective clothing should be worn to prevent skin contact. If skin contact occurs, washing with soap and water should be done immediately. Contaminated or wet clothing should be removed and replaced. There is no recommendation that workers need to change clothing after a work shift (AAR, 1994; (NIOSH , 1996).
EYE/FACE PROTECTION
- Use appropriate eye protection to prevent contact with this substance. In areas where there is any possibility that persons may be exposed to boron tribromide, eyewash fountains should be provided (NIOSH , 1996).

ENGINEERING CONTROLS
- A facility for quickly drenching the body, or body parts, with water needs to be provided within the immediate work area. This is intended to quickly remove boron tribromide from any body areas likely to be exposed. In some instances a hose connected to a sink may be permissible, in others a full deluge shower may be required (NIOSH , 1996).

Vapors may accumulate in confined areas (basement, tanks, hopper/tank cars etc.). Substance will react with water (some violently), releasing corrosive and/or toxic gases. Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated or if contaminated with water.
Boron tribromide is a non-combustible liquid ((CHRIS, 1996); NIOSH , 1996). This compound may explode upon heating, or when in contact with water (Bretherick, 1990; Lewis, 1993). When heated to decomposition this compound releases toxic bromide fumes (Lewis, 1992).

Water spray, fog or alcohol-resistant foam. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Use water spray or fog; do not use straight streams. Dike fire control water for later disposal; do not scatter the material.

AAR (1994) states that water spray may be employed to knock-down boron tribromide vapors as well as cool surrounding containers/structures, this, however, may be somewhat risky as water reacts with this compound to form corrosive and toxic hydrogen bromide and boric acid; heat is evolved in this reaction. If water is used, apply from as far away as possible.

REACTIVITY HAZARD
- Boron tribromide reacts, potentially explosively, with water to form corrosive and toxic hydrogen bromide and boric acid. This reaction is exothermic (AAR, 1994; (ACGIH, 1991; Bretherick, 1990; Lewis, 1992).
- It is incompatible with heat, alcohols, potassium, and sodium (Lewis, 1992; NIOSH , 1996).
- This compound will attack rubber, bakelite, wood, and metals ((CHRIS, 1996); NIOSH , 1996).
- "Tungsten oxide tetrabromide was prepared by condensing a little of the bromide onto the oxide at minus 196 degrees C, then allowing slow warming by immersion of the container in an ice bath. Omission of the ice bath or use of large amounts of bromide may lead to explosions" (Bretherick, 1990).
EVACUATION PROCEDURES

If there is a fire, or if a fire is involved, evacuation information presented under FIRE - PUBLIC SAFETY EVACUATION DISTANCES should be used. Generally, a small spill is one that involves a single, small package such as a drum containing up to approximately 200 liters, a small cylinder, or a small leak from a large package. A large spill is one that involves a spill from a large package, or multiple spills from many small packages. Suggested distances to protect from vapors of toxic-by-inhalation and/or water-reactive materials during the first 30 minutes following the spill.

SPILL OR LEAK PRECAUTIONS - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 157 (ERG, 2004) ELIMINATE all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area). All equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. A vapor suppressing foam may be used to reduce vapors. DO NOT GET WATER INSIDE CONTAINERS. Use water spray to reduce vapors or divert vapor cloud drift. Avoid allowing water runoff to contact spilled material. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas.
RECOMMENDED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 157 (ERG, 2004) Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.
Keep upwind, so that there is no exposure to vapors of this compound. Do not touch the spilled material. If able to do so safely, control or stop the leak. Isolate and contain the spilled material with dikes. Keep water away from the spill; also keep the compound out of sewers and water sources. Absorb in a noncombustible material, or neutralize with soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, lime, or crushed limestone (AAR, 1994; ((CHRIS, 1996); NFPA, 1994). AAR (1994) states that water spray may be employed to knock-down boron tribromide vapors, this, however, may be somewhat risky as water reacts with this compound to form corrosive and toxic hydrogen bromide and boric acid; heat is evolved in this reaction.
"At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices." (HSDB , 1996)
Small amounts of this compound can be disposed of by adding to a large volume of ice water (Bretherick, 1990).
