It is used primarily to stiffen mantles in gas and acetylene lamps, and as a laboratory reagent for chemical analysis (AAR, 1987; (HSDB , 1992).
Beryllium nitrate is a white to pale yellow, deliquescent, crystalline solid (Budavari, 1989) AAR, 1987).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Beryllium nitrate should be considered potentially harmful. The most common route of exposure is via inhalation and dermal contact.
- Beryllium nitrate is an acidic salt and is very irritating. Acute beryllium poisoning consists of irritation of conjunctivae, skin ulcerations, nose bleeds and nasal discharge, headache, fatigue, fever, and chest pain. Acute beryllium pneumonitis may result from both high and low exposures; recovery may occur within one to six months. Right heart failure, due to increased pulmonary arterial resistance, occurs with acute exposures.
- This compound will be directly irritating to the skin, eyelids, and mucous membranes. Contact dermatitis may develop. Acute pulmonary lesions have been produced after a few minutes exposure to beryllium fluoride, a related compound. Decreased pulmonary function can occur with acute exposures. This compound possesses a very low ingestion toxicity.
- Chronic beryllium disease is an idiosyncratic disorder; only about 1 to 20 of the most heavily exposed workers is affected. Diagnosis requires history of exposure, compatible histologic findings, and quantitative tissue analysis.
Symptoms of chronic disease begin with coughing, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, loss of weight, and fatigue. Cyanosis is common; the pulse and respiratory rates are elevated. Red blood cell count may be elevated. Clinical improvement years may occur during several years following removal from the exposure. No treatment is available for berylliosis.
- Studies of beryllium workers have found increased rates of granulomatous hepatitis, and reduced pulmonary function due to the fibrosis caused by berylliosis.
- SENSITIZER - Beryllium was a sensitizer in a footpad reaction and macrophage migration tests on mice.
- Lung cancers have been observed in workers who developed acute chemical workers or bronchitis secondary to beryllium exposure. Beryllium is classified as Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans) by IARC.
- Beryllium was embryotoxic and teratogenic by exerting toxic effects on the mother and fetus.

Toxic by ingestion. Inhalation of dust is toxic. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Contact with substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. Contaminated clothing may be a fire risk when dry. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Keep victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
INHALATION EXPOSURE - INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm. Immediately hospitalize in acute exposure cases and observe for 72 hours for onset of pneumonitis (HSDB , 1992). Bed rest and symptomatic treatment may be all that is required in mild forms of beryllium poisoning. Corticosteroids may be a useful adjunct for controlling dyspnea and delaying the onset of right heart failure and pulmonary insufficiency after chronic exposure.
EYE EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility.
DERMAL EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contaminated clothing and jewelry and place them in plastic bags. Wash exposed areas with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes with gentle sponging to avoid skin breakdown. A physician may need to examine the area if irritation or pain persists (Burgess et al, 1999). If beryllium enters through cut or puncture wounds, a physician immediately should cleanse the area thoroughly and excise any imbedded beryllium material (HSDB , 1992). Thoroughly cleanse any skin that may have embedded beryllium. Contaminated clothing should be removed and isolated so that no direct personal exposure occurs during handling and cleaning (HSDB , 1992).
ORAL EXPOSURE - DILUTION: If no respiratory compromise is present, administer milk or water as soon as possible after ingestion. Dilution may only be helpful if performed in the first seconds to minutes after ingestion. The ideal amount is unknown; no more than 8 ounces (240 mL) in adults and 4 ounces (120 mL) in children is recommended to minimize the risk of vomiting. Material may be irritating or caustic depending on concentration. Emesis should be used with caution if at all.

Keep beryllium nitrate stored in dry, tightly closed containers, in a cool place (Budavari, 1989; OHM/TADS , 1992). Protect containers from physical damage (HSDB , 1992).

FIRE HAZARD
POTENTIAL FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARDS - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 141 (ERG, 2004) These substances will accelerate burning when involved in a fire. May explode from heat or contamination. Some may burn rapidly. Some will react explosively with hydrocarbons (fuels). May ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may create fire or explosion hazard.
Beryllium is non-combustible. However, it decomposes at between 100 to 200 degrees C, burns rapidly, and may ignite other combustible materials, particularly fuels (AAR, 1987; (HSDB , 1992; Sax & Lewis, 1987).

Flood fire area with water from a distance. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Do not move cargo or vehicle if cargo has been exposed to heat. Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn.

Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water applied from as far a distance as possible (AAR, 1987). Combustibles increase the intensity of the fire (CHRIS , 1992).
Irritating and toxic gases, including beryllium oxides and oxides of nitrogen, may be produced during decomposition of beryllium nitrate in a fire (AAR, 1987; (CHRIS , 1992; HSDB , 1992).
EXPLOSION HAZARD
- An explosion hazard is present if large quantities, especially as a fine dust, of beryllium nitrate are involved in fire. Also prolonged exposure to heat or fire may create an explosion (AAR, 1987).
DUST/VAPOR HAZARD
- Beryllium nitrate dust is extremely toxic; avoid both inhalation, skin, as well as mucous membrane contact (OHM/TADS , 1992).

Shovel small, dry spills into clean, dry covered container and dispose according to environmental regulations. Contain large liquid spills (HSDB , 1992). Solids: Cover solids with a plastic sheet to prevent dissolving in rain or fire-fighting water (AAR, 1987). Water Spill/Liquids: Dam stream to reduce flow of beryllium nitrate. Build a dike far ahead to contain; and dig a pit, lagoon, or holding area to collect large leaks/spills (AAR, 1987; (HSDB , 1992; OHM/TADS , 1992). Keep beryllium nitrate out of sewers and water sources (AAR, 1987). May be dangerous if it enters water intakes; notify nearby water plant operators, health and wildlife officials (CHRIS , 1992). Water Spill: Use mechanical dredges or lifts to remove immobilized masses of pollutants or precipitates (AAR, 1987). Environmental regulatory agencies must be consulted before landfilling beryllium nitrate waste or sludge (HSDB , 1992). Treatment: To dispose of small quantities, dissolve in 6M hydrochloric acid; filter; and treat filtrate with slight excess of 6M sodium hydroxide. Boil, settle precipitate for 12 hours, filter and dispose (OHM/TADS , 1992). Treatment: For large spills, neutralize with agricultural lime, crushed limestone, or sodium bicarbonate (AAR, 1987). Treatment: Adjust pH to 7 before disposal (AAR, 1987). Treatment: Precipitate beryllium by adding carbon dioxide, lime and use cation exchangers to collect (OHM/TADS , 1992). Treatment: An aluminum coagulant (220 ppm at pH 6.4) combined with 40 ppm ferric chloride at a pH of 6.4 and 415 ppm lime at pH 11.5 precipitated 95% of the beryllium. The coagulant was collected using media filtration (HSDB , 1992).
