Pentanedione is used as a chemical intermediate, additive for lubricants, and metal chelator (Guzzie et al, 1987).
2,4-PENTANEDIONE, also called ACETYLACETONE or ACETOACETONE, is a clear, flammable liquid with an odor described as both unpleasant (Clayton & Clayton, 1982) and pleasant (Sax, 1985). It is soluble in water, and is miscible with alcohol, ether, chloroform, acetone, and glacial acetic acid (Sax, 1985). With an odor threshold of 0.01 ppm (Clayton & Clayton, 1982), pentanedione is a material with good warning properties. However, odor alone should never be used to determine if an environment is safe.

TOXIC; may be fatal if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through skin. Inhalation or contact with some of these materials will irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Pentanedione was a mild skin irritant and a severe eye irritant in rabbits (RTECS). Inhalation of vapor has caused nausea, headache, and signs of CNS depression (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Other possible effects of acute inhalation exposure are weakness, dizziness, incoordination, sleepiness, and possible loss of consciousness. Pentanedione produced breathing difficulty, severe CNS depression, and death in experimental animals (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- There is a possibility of CUMULATIVE TOXICITY with repeated pentanedione exposure (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).
- Pentanedione was a sensitizer on the skin of guinea pigs, and may cause hives in humans (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).
- Repeated exposure by the oral route caused irreversible brain damage, destruction of the thymus, and tremor and staggering at lower doses in rats (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Clouding of the cornea was also seen. Similar effects were produced in rabbits (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Wash skin with soap and water. Keep victim warm and quiet. In case of burns, immediately cool affected skin for as long as possible with cold water. Do not remove clothing if adhering to skin. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn.

Listed as: 2,4-Pentanediol Extinguishing Method(s): 5, 1 5: Flammable liquid fires can be extinguished using carbon dioxide, dry chemical, foam, and vaporizing liquid extinguishers, as long as the fires are small to moderate in size and the flammable liquid reservoir is shallow. Use of foam to form a blanket over a flammable liquid is not effective when the liquid is water-soluble. Certain alcohol resistant foams are effective extinguishing agents for polar, non-polar, and water-soluble liquid fires. These foams are preferred for fighting flammable liquid fires except those that involve water reactive flammable liquids. 1: "Water may be ineffective" applies to a situation where materials with a flash point below 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C) are burning. Water will only be effective if used by experienced fire fighters under favorable conditions. Even though water may not put the fire out, it can be used to protect equipment and structures.
