GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Vanadium trioxide is poisonous by ingestion, subcutaneous and intratracheal routes; it is an irritant.
- The following information is for VANADIUM COMPOUNDS in general:
Vanadium metal is low in toxicity. The pentavalent forms such as vanadium pentoxide and vanadates are more toxic than other forms. Vanadium salt toxicity is high parenterally, low orally and intermediate via inhalation. If inhaled (as dust) the primary symptoms are respiratory. Symptoms may persist up to 2 weeks after exposure, but few if any systemic symptoms have been seen and the prognosis is favorable. The smaller the particle size the greater the pulmonary toxicity. Therefore the fumes are more toxic than the dust. Vanadium compounds act chiefly as irritants to the respiratory tract and conjunctivae. Prolonged exposure may lead to pulmonary involvement. Responses are acute, never chronic. Symptoms are pallor, green-black tongue, cough, conjunctivitis, dyspnea and pain in the chest, bronchitis, rales and rhonchi, bronchospasm, and tremors of the fingers and arms.

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance;give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

Effects observed in rabbits exposed to vanadium trioxide aerosol (40 to 75 mg/m(3), 2 hr/day, 9 to 12 months) included sneezing, nasal discharge, dyspnea and tachypnea, and in some cases, attacks of bronchial asthma (HSDB , 1992).

Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.

Although ores containing small amounts of vanadium are rather widely distributed throughout the world, the most important ones are found in the Western Hemisphere. During the 1970s, domestic US sources (mine production and recovery) were largely confined to four states: Colorado, Arkansas, Idaho and Utah. The chief vanadium ores in uranium bearing sandstones are carnotite, roscoelite and vanadinite (HSDB , 1992). Vanadium does not occur naturally in highly concentrated forms. This is true despite the fact that it is as abundant in the earth's crust as zinc and nickel and occurs in at least 50 different mineral species (HSDB , 1992). Although vanadium is considered to be an ubiquitous element in nature, in soil, water, and air its presence is often absent or extremely minute or highly variable, depending on locale or region. In soil, it is ranked tenth in abundance of 29 trace metals and thirteenth in seawater, but in the surface waters of the US, vanadium was found in only 54 of 1500 samples, a 3.4% overall frequency (Clayton & Clayton, 1981). Petroleum and other naturally occurring hydrocarbons, such as asphaltite, contain appreciable quantities of vanadium (HSDB , 1992).
