It is used as a reducing agent for aldehydes and ketones, after activation by potassium or cesium fluorides. It is also used to produce functional coupling agents in the production of silicone rubbers, elastomers, and monomers (HSDB , 1990).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Little information is available on human toxicity of triethoxysilane. This review is based on the properties of silanes in general. Effects attributed specifically to triethoxysilane are identified.
- Ethoxysilanes are irritating to skin and mucous membranes. Oral toxicity is less than for chlorosilanes in animals. Nothing was found about effects of chronic exposure.

Vapors may cause dizziness or asphyxiation without warning. Some may be toxic if inhaled at high concentrations. Contact with gas or liquefied gas may cause burns, severe injury and/or frostbite. Fire may produce irritating and/or toxic gases.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Triethoxysilane is expected to have effects similar to those of the chlorosilanes, but to a milder degree. Silanes are hazardous by the inhalation, dermal, or oral exposure routes (EPA, 1985; Sax & Lewis, 1989). Triethoxysilane is moderately toxic by inhalation (Sax & Lewis, 1989). Ethoxysilanes are moderately irritating to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes (EPA, 1985).
- Silanes can cause second- or third-degree burns (CHRIS , 1993). While triethoxysilane is expected to be less corrosive than the chlorosilanes, the degree of skin injury would be a function of the extent, concentration, and duration of skin exposure.
- Dyspnea and pulmonary edema may develop after inhalation of silane vapors (EPA, 1985).
- While ethoxysilane is not expected to have such serious effects, ingestion of other silanes may cause spontaneous vomiting, burns of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach, viscid white or blood-stained foamy mucous and threads of tissue in the mouth, swelling of the throat, possible perforation of the esophagus, together with systemic effects, such as weak and rapid pulse with circulatory collapse (EPA, 1985; HSDB , 1993). Emesis may contain fresh blood if corrosion of the gastrointestinal tract has occurred (HSDB , 1993). Systemic effects, such as circulatory collapse (leading to kidney failure) with a weak and rapid pulse may follow ingestion of some silanes (HSDB , 1993). Gastric, esophageal, and pyloric strictures with stenosis and obstruction by scar tissue as a result of ingestion may require surgical repair (EPA, 1985).
- Shallow and difficult breathing, lacrimation, nasal discharge, salivation, and kidney failure were noted in rats exposed to silane vapor (Rowe et al, 1948). Instillation of a small drop of chlorosilane produced severe damage to rabbit eyes, including corneal and eyelid burns (Rowe et al, 1948). Corrosion of the gastrointestinal tract occurred when chlorosilanes were given orally (Rowe et al, 1948).
- In experimental animals, oral and inhalation toxicity is less for the alkoxysilanes than for the chlorosilanes (RTECS , 1993).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- At the time of this review, no reports of chronic exposure to triethoxysilane were found in humans or experimental animals.

SUMMARY

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with liquefied gas, thaw frosted parts with lukewarm water. In case of burns, immediately cool affected skin for as long as possible with cold water. Do not remove clothing if adhering to skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
INHALATION EXPOSURE - INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm. ACUTE LUNG INJURY: Maintain ventilation and oxygenation and evaluate with frequent arterial blood gases and/or pulse oximetry monitoring. Early use of PEEP and mechanical ventilation may be needed. All persons with significant inhalation exposure should be admitted to a hospital, and observed and treated under controlled conditions until all signs and symptoms have resolved.
DERMAL EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contaminated clothing and jewelry and irrigate exposed areas with copious amounts of water. A physician may need to examine the area if irritation or pain persists. Remove and isolate all contaminated clothing and shoes (EPA, 1985). Treat as hazardous waste. All persons with significant dermal exposure should be admitted to a hospital, and observed and treated under controlled conditions until all signs and symptoms have resolved. Treat dermal irritation or burns with standard topical therapy. Patients developing dermal hypersensitivity reactions may require treatment with systemic or topical corticosteroids or antihistamines.
EYE EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility. There is no specific antidote for eye exposure to the chlorosilanes (Grant, 1986). All persons with significant eye exposure should be admitted to a hospital, and observed and treated under controlled conditions until all signs and symptoms have resolved.
ORAL EXPOSURE - Do not induce vomiting or give bicarbonate to neutralize. Irrigate the mouth with copious amounts of water. Immediately dilute with 4 to 8 ounces (120 to 240 milliliters) of milk or water (not to exceed 15 milliliters per kilogram in a child). Follow dilution with appropriate demulcents - milk, cornstarch, and water. All persons with significant oral exposure should be admitted to a hospital and observed and treated under controlled conditions until all signs and symptoms have resolved.

POTENTIAL FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARDS - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 116 (ERG, 2004) EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE. Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Will form explosive mixtures with air. Silane will ignite spontaneously in air. Those substances designated with a "P" may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire. Vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than air and spread along ground. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Cylinders exposed to fire may vent and release flammable gas through pressure relief devices. Containers may explode when heated. Ruptured cylinders may rocket.
Little specific information is available for triethoxysilane. Some of the information below is for silanes in general. Silanes are extremely flammable. They may be ignited by heat, sparks or flames (HSDB , 1990). Silane vapors may travel to a source of ignition and flash back (HSDB , 1990). When heated to decomposition, triethoxysilane emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes (Sax & Lewis, 1989). Wear special protective clothing and a self-contained positive pressure breathing apparatus (EPA, 1985). If silanes are involved in a fire, call CHEMTREC at 1-800-424-9300 as soon as possible, especially if there is no local hazardous materials team available (HSDB , 1990). Dike fire control water for later disposal; do not scatter the material (EPA, 1985). If water pollution occurs, notify the appropriate authorities.

Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Do not direct water at source of leak or safety devices; icing may occur. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn.
