Titanium is used in structural alloys, aircraft parts, surgical implants, electrodes, lamp filaments, magnets, and welding rods (Clayton & Clayton, 1982; (Friberg et al, 1986; Budavari, 1996; Lewis, 1993). It is the ninth most common element on earth, with an estimated daily intake of up to 0.5 mg, mostly from food (Friberg et al, 1986).
TITANIUM is a silver-gray, lustrous, corrosion-resistant metal or powder with some non-metallic characteristics (Friberg et al, 1986; Budavari, 1996; Lewis, 1993). It exists in the +2, +3, and +4 valence states, with +4 being the most common (Friberg et al, 1986; Clayton & Clayton, 1994). The +4 compounds easily hydrolyze to form TITANIUM DIOXIDE, which is also the most important titanium compound in industrial use. Metallic titanium is insoluble in water, but is attacked by concentrated sulfuric and hydrochloric acids (Lewis, 1993). Metallic titanium compounds are the chloride, phosphate, sulfate, and nitrate, while non-metallic compounds are the titanates. Titanium also forms organometallic compounds (Friberg et al, 1986). The metal dust is a FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD (EOSH, 1982; (Lewis, 1993). Following titanium exposure, it is mainly found in the lungs, where it accumulates over time with a disappearance half-life apparently greater than 300 days in humans (Friberg et al, 1986). It is found at low levels in all tissues (Clayton & Clayton, 1994).

Oxides from metallic fires are a severe health hazard. Inhalation or contact with substance or decomposition products may cause severe injury or death. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.

ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- The toxicity of titanium and its compounds is extremely low (Friberg et al, 1986). Most occupational exposures are to the DUSTS. Titanium is poorly absorbed; absorption by the inhalation exposure route has not been studied (Friberg et al, 1986). It has no local effects on tissues (except for the tetrachloride, which is corrosive) (Friberg et al, 1986; Clayton & Clayton, 1994).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Chronic inhalation exposures in experimental animals have caused mild fibrosis with some titanium salts dioxide (Friberg et al, 1986). Certain titanium-containing FIBERS, such as titanium phosphate or potassium octatitanate, may be fibrogenic (Friberg et al, 1986). Titanium metal and titanium dioxide are not fibrogenic in humans, although one reference stated that it may cause a mild pneumoconiosis (ILO, 1983).
- T-lymphocytes are elevated in persons with titanium debris in their tissues, and some persons with titanium metallosis may become sensitized to titanium (Revell & Lalor, 1995). There is one published case of a possible delayed hypersensitivity reaction to titanium (Capellini, 1970).

Dousing metallic fires with water may generate hydrogen gas, an extremely dangerous explosion hazard, particularly if fire is in a confined environment (i.e., building, cargo hold, etc.). Use DRY sand, graphite powder, dry sodium chloride based extinguishers, G-1® or Met-L-X® powder. Confining and smothering metal fires is preferable rather than applying water.
