GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Many human poisonings and deaths have occurred from thallous sulfate in rodenticides. Symptoms are usually delayed 12 to 24 hours in acute poisoning; the gastrointestinal tract and nervous system most often show the first signs of poisoning.
- Central and peripheral neurological effects include headache, paresthesias, delirium, convulsions, dementia and psychosis. Hemolysis and renal damage occur, and alopecia appears in one to three weeks.
- Chronic poisoning symptoms may be nonspecific, and thallium intoxication may not be suspected until alopecia or kidney damage occurs. Effects of chronic poisoning appear to be similar to those of acute exposure.

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance;give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

LAND SPILL (AAR, 1987) Dig a pit, pond, lagoon, or holding area to contain liquid or solid material. Cover solids with a plastic sheet to prevent dissolving in rain or fire fighting water.
WATER SPILL (AAR, 1987) If dissolved in region of 10 ppm or greater concentration, apply activated carbon at ten times the spilled amount. Use mechanical dredges or lifts to remove immobilized masses of pollutants and precipitates.
HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL "At the time of this review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices." In nature, thallium does not occur in the elemental state but is present as a trace compound in many minerals, mainly associated with potassium and rubidium. The mean abundance of thallium in the earth's crust is approximately 1 ppm. Thallium occurs in small amounts in almost all living organisms. Artificial sources of thallium pollution are gaseous emissions of cement factories, coal burning power plants, and metal sewers: Other industries that cause pollution are those that manufacture alloys, artificial diamonds and gems, chlorinated compounds, dyes and luminous paints, fireworks, commercial and optical glass, infrared instruments including photoelectric cells, and rodenticides (HSDB , 1992).
