TETRAHYDROTHIOPHENE

Tetrahydrothiophene is used as a solvent, chemical intermediate, fuel gas odorant, insecticide (HSDB), and bird and moth repellent (Yonezawa, 1974). It is a human metabolite of ASPARAGUS (HSDB).
The odor threshold of 1 ppb (HSDB) should provide adequate warning properties. Its commercial use as an odorant relies on this property. Nevertheless, odor alone should never be used to determine if an environment is safe.
The toxicology of tetrahydrothiophene has been reviewed (Rees & Sugden, 1972).

FORMS

TETRAHYDROTHIOPHENE, also called THIOPHANE, is a water-white, flammable liquid with a stenchy odor (HSDB). It is insoluble in water, but is soluble in alcohol, ether, acetone, benzene, and organic solvents (HSDB). It can react violently with hydrogen peroxide (Koppell, 1974).

SOURCES

Tetrahydrothiophene is generated through the vapor-phase reaction tetrahydrofuran and hydrogen sulfide over a heteropolyacid-promoted metal oxide catalyst followed by separation and distillation of tetrahydrothiophene (HSDB, 2003).
"Thiophene is reduced to tetrahydrothiophene by sodium in alcohol or ammonia, or with palladium, cobalt, molybdenum or rhenium catalysts under carefully controlled conditions" (HSDB, 2003).

Tetrahydrothiophene is a skin and eye irritant and can cause burns (HSDB; (Beutner, 1973). Inhalation can cause dizziness and suffocation (HSDB).

Tetrahydrothiophene was not irritating to rabbit skin (HSDB). It antagonized the increase in blood pressure induced by adrenaline in rats (Thuranszky, 1975).

CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS

Persons working with tetrahydrothiophene have reported headache, palpitations, giddiness, and nausea (HSDB). No other chronic exposure studies were found at the time of this review.
