Tetraethyltine is used as a biocide, bactericide, fungicide, insecticide, and as a preservative for wood, textiles, paper, and leather (EPA, 1985; Sax & Lewis, 1989)
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Tetraethyltin may be systemically absorbed following ingestion or dermal contact. Muscular weakness, respiratory failure, seizures, light sensitivity, EEG changes, dizziness, headaches, sore throat, coughing, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, cerebral edema, and neurological and psychological disturbances may occur following tetraethyltin exposure. Onset may be delayed for up to several days after exposure.
- Tetraethyltin caused decreased brain dopamine and serotonin levels in rats.

ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Based on its acute oral LD50 of 16 mg/kg in rats (RTECS , 1993), tetraethyl tin is a HIGHLY TOXIC substance. It may be systemically absorbed following ingestion or dermal contact (EPA, 1985; Sax & Lewis, 1989a).
- Organotin compounds are primary skin irritants and can be absorbed through intact skin, although the only serious human poisonings to date have followed ingestion and inhalation (ACGIH, 1986; Proctor et al, 1988; (Sittig, 1985; Ellenhorn & Barceloux, 1988).
- The primary target of organotin compounds is the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. Muscular weakness, respiratory failure, convulsions, light sensitivity, EEG changes, dizziness, headaches, sore throat, cough, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, cerebral edema, and neurological and psychological disturbances may occur from tetraethyltin exposure (EPA, 1985; Watanabe, 1980; pp 281-288). The onset of signs and symptoms may be delayed (pp 281-288). Headache and vomiting has occurred in humans exposed to tetraethyltin (US DHHS, 1981).
- Tetraethyltin is metabolized to triethyltin, a trialkyltin compound. Effects of trialkyltin intoxication include headache, nausea, gastric pain, visual defects, decreased hearing, tinnitus, paresthesias, EEG abnormalities, altered consciousness, possible skin burns, erythema, or dermatitis, ocular and nasal irritation, and shortness of breath (Louria et al, 1972; Besser et al, 1987; Winship, 1988). After ingestion or injection, symptoms may be delayed 2 to 4 days.
- In addition to the above effects, dizziness, vertigo, disorientation, tinnitus, deafness, psychosis, respiratory depression, photophobia, vomiting, urinary retention, and weakness or flaccid paralysis of the limbs may occur from exposure to organotin compounds, particularly following ingestion (Sittig, 1985; Ellenhorn & Barceloux, 1988). There may be a latent period of 1 to 3 DAYS for onset of symptoms (Ellenhorn & Barceloux, 1988). Cerebral edema and hepatic necrosis have been described following exposure to certain organotin compounds (Proctor et al, 1988). Seizures and a diffuse sensation of pain may occur (Ellenhorn & Barceloux, 1988).
- Long-term sequelae of acute poisoning have included paresthesias, headaches, visual abnormalities, aggressive behavior, memory deficits, and extrapyramidal hyperkinesis (Ellenhorn & Barceloux, 1988).
- Injections of alkyltin compounds in experimental animals have caused ataxia, unsteadiness, and paralysis. The brain is the target organ (Barnes & Stoner, 1959). Tetraethyltin caused decreases in brain dopamine and serotonin levels in rats (Chester & Meyers, 1988).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Eye and respiratory tract irritation, skin lesions, itching, abdominal pain, sore throat, coughing, and retching have occurred with occupational organotin exposure (ACGIH, 1986; Proctor et al, 1988; (Sittig, 1985). While not documented in the literature, it is anticipated that chronic exposure could produce neurological effects similar to those of acute exposure.

The toxicity of most organotin compounds is not well documented. The estimated toxic dose of triethyltin is 70 milligrams within 8 days (Barnes & Stoner, 1959). Triethyltin is estimated to be 10 times as potent as diethyltin orally (Barnes & Stoner, 1959).
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting occurred several hours after acute ingestion of triphenyltin by a 23-year-old male. On the day following ingestion, severe ataxia, dysmetria, nystagmus, and blurred vision were reported (Wu et al, 1990). Mental status changes developed 12 days after ingestion, progressing to coma which lasted for 1.5 months. A delayed sensorimotor polyneuropathy which gradually resolved and slow improvement of mental status were noted (Wu et al, 1990).
