USES/FORMS/SOURCES
Styrene oxide is used as a diluent or reactive plasticizer for epoxy resins, a chemical intermediate in styrene glycol, phenethyl alcohol, or specialty polyol production, and in the process of producing a polymer with linoleic acid dimer, ethylene-diamine, and 2-ethoxyethyl acetate (Vainio & Hietanen, 1987) Clayton & Clayton, 1994).
Styrene oxide is a major metabolite of styrene, but is itself produced for commercial use. Commercial sytrene oxide is produced by the treatment of styrene chlorohydrin with alkali or by using peracetic acid to epoxidize styrene (Vainio & Hietanen, 1987; Hathaway et al, 1991; Lewis, 1993) Clayton & Clayton, 1994).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Styrene oxide is an eye and skin irritant and skin sensitizer. Persons who have become sensitized may react severely to contact with the vapor as well as with the liquid.
- Exposed experimental animals have developed central nervous system depression and hepatic injury. Styrene oxide is mutagenic. It is considered an experimental animal carcinogen, but is an indefinite human carcinogen. Some reproductive toxicity has been noted in experimental animals.

Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.
-FIRST AID
FIRST AID AND PREHOSPITAL TREATMENT
INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm.
DECONTAMINATION: Remove contaminated clothing and jewelry and place them in plastic bags. Wash exposed areas with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes with gentle sponging to avoid skin breakdown. A physician may need to examine the area if irritation or pain persists (Burgess et al, 1999). Treat dermal irritation or burns with standard topical therapy. Patients developing dermal hypersensitivity reactions may require treatment with systemic or topical corticosteroids or antihistamines.
DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility.
DILUTION: If no respiratory compromise is present, administer milk or water as soon as possible after ingestion. Dilution may only be helpful if performed in the first seconds to minutes after ingestion. The ideal amount is unknown; no more than 8 ounces (240 mL) in adults and 4 ounces (120 mL) in children is recommended to minimize the risk of vomiting. Gastric lavage is of questionable safety and care must be taken if the procedure is done. DILUTION: If no respiratory compromise is present, administer milk or water as soon as possible after ingestion. Dilution may only be helpful if performed in the first seconds to minutes after ingestion. The ideal amount is unknown; no more than 8 ounces (240 mL) in adults and 4 ounces (120 mL) in children is recommended to minimize the risk of vomiting (Caravati, 2004). ACTIVATED CHARCOAL: Administer charcoal as a slurry (240 mL water/30 g charcoal). Usual dose: 25 to 100 g in adults/adolescents, 25 to 50 g in children (1 to 12 years), and 1 g/kg in infants less than 1 year old. Evaluate carefully for complications of gastrointestinal irritation (perforation, bleeding, mediastinitis, late sequelae of esophageal stricture) and treat appropriately. Assure airway patency and oxygenation if central nervous system depression occurs. Observe patients with ingestion carefully for the possible development of esophageal or gastrointestinal tract irritation or burns. If signs or symptoms of esophageal irritation or burns are present, consider endoscopy to determine the extent of injury.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Wash skin with soap and water. In case of burns, immediately cool affected skin for as long as possible with cold water. Do not remove clothing if adhering to skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
No systemic poisonings or ingestions have been described in humans. Exposed skin and eyes should be copiously flushed. Move patients with inhalation exposure to fresh air and administer 100% humidified supplemental oxygen with assisted ventilation as required. Due to the potential irritant effect on the esophagus and stomach, emesis should be avoided in ingestions. Dilution with milk or water may be useful. Patients with serious exposure should have liver function tests monitored.
-RANGE OF TOXICITY
MINIMUM LETHAL EXPOSURE
In rats, exposure to 1000 ppm was lethal to 2 of 6 animals within 4 hours (Hathaway et al, 1991). Repeated 7-hour exposures at 300 ppm were rapidly fatal to 40% of female rats, and extensive mortality occurred in rats receiving prolonged exposure to 100 ppm (Hathaway et al, 1991). Prolonged and repeated exposures at 15 to 50 ppm in the rabbit produced mortality (Hathaway et al, 1991).
MAXIMUM TOLERATED EXPOSURE
The maximum tolerated human exposure to this agent has not been delineated. Solutions as dilute as 1% may be irritating to skin and eyes (Clayton & Clayton, 1981; Hathaway et al, 1991). A single intraperitoneal dose of 375 mg/kg in rats has produced decreased glutathione and mixed-function oxidase content in the liver (Vainio & Hietanen, 1987).

Since no data are available on which to base an industrial hygiene standard for styrene oxide, it is advisable to take all possible precautions to avoid contact with the agent during use and handling (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Styrene oxide should not be subjected to excessive pressure in either reaction or storage conditions, and precautions should be taken allowing release of excessive pressure should it develop (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).

Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Those substances designated with a "P" may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. - Styrene oxide may be released to the environment in wastewater or as emissions during its production and use as a reactive plasticizer in epoxy resins and a chemical intermediate (HSDB , 1992).
- Air: In the atmosphere, styrene oxide will degrade by reacting with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals (estimated half-life of 3.1 days) (HSDB , 1992).
- Water: If released in water, styrene oxide will hydrolyze with a half-life of 28 hours at neutral pH and less in more acid media. Volatilization losses will also be expected in rivers. Bioconcentration in fish and adsorption to sediments should not be significant fate processes. Hydrolysis is faster at lower pHs (HSDB , 1992).
- Soil: If released on land, styrene oxide will leach into the ground and probably degrade fairly rapidly by reacting with water and other compounds with active hydrogen atoms. Hydrolysis is faster in acid media and therefore degradation in more acidic soils should be more rapid (HSDB , 1992).
