USES/FORMS/SOURCES
Antimycin A1 and A3 are antibiotic substances produced by Streptomycetes and are fungicides, insecticides, and miticides (EPA, 1985). Antimycin A is registered as a pesticide in the United States (EPA, 1985). Antimycin A is said to have strong fungicidal properties (Lewis, 1996) as well as having piscicidal properties useful in fisheries management (Abidi, 1982).
Antimycin A is produced by a species of Streptomyces. Antimycin A1 is also produced by an unidentified actinomycete (called RTI 246) (Hamilton et al, 1969).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Incoordination, impaired reflexes, and respiratory distress have been reported in mice injected intravenously with Antimycin A. No cases of human poisoning with this agent have been reported. Antimycin A is an experimental mutagen.

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- No cases of human poisoning with antimycin A have been reported. With an oral LD50 of 28 mg/kg in rats, Antimycin A is a highly toxic substance (Lewis, 1992; (RTECS , 1996; Hamilton et al, 1969). Another source has stated that its acute toxicity in mammals is low (Greselin & Herr, 1974). Birds and fish appear to be especially sensitive to the acute lethal effects (RTECS , 1996).
- Respiratory distress, impaired reflexes, incoordination, and terminal symptoms consistent with CNS depression have been reported in experimental animals poisoned by the oral or parenteral routes (Hamilton et al, 1969; RTECS , 1996).
- Antimycin A is a metabolic inhibitor of respiration (Weiner & Lardy, 1974). It inhibits electron transport and depletes ATP (Weinberg et al, 1994). Its site of action in the electron transport chain is between cytochromes b and c1, where it binds and induces conformational changes (Convent & Briquet, 1975). While its mode and site of action are similar to that of DIURON , the two compounds have differently shaped dose-response curves for inhibition of succinate oxidation in yeast mitochrondria (Convent & Briquet, 1975).
- Depletion of cellular ATP leads to depletion of levels of reduced glutathione in isolated hepatocytes (Mithofer et al, 1992). This might potentially affect detoxification and elimination of many other xenobiotic compounds eliminated as glutathione conjugates.
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- No toxic effects were apparent in rats and dogs given antimycin in the drinking water or antimycin-killed fish as half of the diet for 3 months. Decreased food consumption at the beginning of the test was apparently due to the compound's bitter taste (Greselin & Herr, 1974).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance;give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

At the time of this review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices (HSDB , 1993).

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICITY
- WATER: Stream-dwelling invertebrates were decimated by application of 10 mcg/L of antimycin A for fish eradication in Ord Creek, Arizona. Three years later, numbers, biomass and diversity of invertebrates were similar to pretreatment conditions, but possible taxonomic changes were indicated (HSDB , 1993).
