IDENTIFIERS
USES/FORMS/SOURCES
It is used as a dye in products containing hydrocarbons, oils, fats, waxes, and styrene resins (HSDB , 1998). It is considered unsafe for use in food for human consumption by the FAO/WHO (HSDB , 1998).
SOLVENT YELLOW 14, also called 1-PHENYLAZO-2-NAPHTHALENOL, SUDAN I, and many other commercial names, is an azo dye which occurs as a brick-red crystalline solid (HSDB , 1998). It is soluble in ethanol, acetone, ether, and benzene. The final color and purity may vary considerably from one use to another (HSDB , 1998).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Editor's Note: An ERG guide with information appropriate to this material does not exist.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- At the time of this review, no acute exposure studies were found for Solvent Yellow 14 in humans or experimental animals. The dust MAY BE ASSUMED to be irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract from frictional action.
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Solvent Yellow 14 has caused allergic skin reactions in persons exposed occupationally (Fregert & Gruvberger, 1976; Fujimoto, 1985; Kozuka, 1980; Civatte, 1984). It has caused pigmented contact dermatitis as a component of "Kumkum" (an Indian cosmetic) (Kozuka et al, 1988).

This category is used most commonly for agents, mixtures and exposure circumstances for which the evidence of carcinogenicity is inadequate in humans and inadequate or limited in experimental animals. Exceptionally, agents (mixtures) for which the evidence of carcinogenicity is inadequate in humans but sufficient in experimental animals may be placed in this category when there is strong evidence that the mechanism of carcinogenicity in experimental animals does not operate in humans. Agents, mixtures and exposure circumstances that do not fall into any other group are also placed in this category.
