It is used in fluoridating public water supplies (Clayton & Clayton, 1982), in aluminum and beryllium refining, laundry sour (ACGIH, 1986), as earwig or weevil bait (RTECS , 1997), and in enamel and glazes for pottery (ILO, 1983). Exposures also occur in superphosphate manufacturing (Kobec, 1972). Its solubility is only 1/150 that of sodium fluoride (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). In spite of its low solubility, experimental animal data suggest similar uptake, retention, and deposition of fluoride regardless of whether oral exposure was to sodium silicofluoride or sodium fluoride (McClure, 1950); there was a similar extent of poisoning by either the inhalation or oral exposure routes (Gabovich, 1972). Sodium silicofluoride is a HIGHLY TOXIC SUBSTANCE. The toxic effects of sodium silicofluoride are similar to those of other inorganic fluorides. Chronic excess exposure to fluorides can cause structural changes in the bones; FLUOROSIS and OSTEOSCLEROSIS which involve excessive calcification of the bones and ligaments resulting in stiffness and limitation of motion (NIOSH/OSHA). These conditions have not been reported in the USA from occupational fluoride exposure (NIOSH/OSHA), and it is not clear if exposure to sodium silicofluoride itself could produce either fluorosis or osteosclerosis.
SODIUM SILICOFLUORIDE, also called SODIUM FLUOROSILICATE, is a white granular powder solid which is slightly soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol (HSDB , 1997). Sodium silicofluoride is slowly converted in water (and presumably in the body) to SODIUM FLUORIDE (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). The kinetics of this conversion under biological conditions versus the elimination of sodium silicofluoride are not known. Therefore, it cannot be predicted what levels of free fluoride ion could accumulate in the body from a given exposure to sodium silicofluoride. The ACGIH has established a Biological Exposure Index (BEI) for FLUORIDES. Refer to the BIOMONITORING section for more information.

GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS

TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Acute effects of sodium silicofluoride exposure include eye, respiratory tract, and skin irritation (NIOSH/OSHA). There have also been reports of asthma and pulmonary fibrosis (NIOSH/OSHA).
- Sodium silicofluoride is highly toxic by the oral exposure route. Symptoms of acute ingestion (for fluorides in general) include a salty or soapy taste in the mouth, excessive salivation, nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, muscle weakness, tremors or spasms, CNS depression, shock (HSDB , 1997), shortness of breath, disturbed color vision, kidney damage, bleeding from the stomach, loss of consciousness, and death (NIOSH/OSHA).
- Skin contact can produce redness, burning, and (sometimes) ulcers (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Inhalation poisoning is rare (ACGIH, 1986), and no data were found for acute effects of sodium silicofluoride inhalation in humans. Guinea pigs exposed to an airborne concentration of 13 to 55 mg/m(3) had pulmonary irritation, while exposure to airborne concentrations of 33 mg/m(3) or higher was lethal (Weber & Engelhardt, 1933).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Repeated sodium silicofluoride skin exposure can produce a pustular rash (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). In an occupational study of female superphosphate workers, there were excess respiratory, cardiac, and gastrointestinal disturbances, and chronic bronchitis (Kobec, 1972).
- Sodium silicofluoride produced similar toxicity when given chronically to rats either orally or by inhalation (Gabovich, 1972). Sodium silicofluoride appeared to have toxicity similar to that of sodium fluoride when given to rats in the drinking water at 5 to 50 ppm for 90 to 103 days; similar amounts of fluoride were retained and deposited in the bones and teeth (McClure, 1950).
- Chronic sodium silicofluoride exposure might produce fluorosis and osterosclerosis as do other fluoride compounds; however, no reports were found to directly link sodium silicofluoride with these effects. One study of potroom employees at an aluminum smelter reported fluorosis after ten years of exposure to levels greater than 2.4 mg/m(3). Osteosclerosis was seen after fifteen years of exposure. Urinary fluorides averaged 8 to 10 mg/L in these workers (ACGIH, 1986).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
