SODIUM METAVANADATE

SODIUM METAVANADATE, also called SODIUM VANADATE, is a colorless, odorless crystalline solid which is soluble in water (211 g/L at 25 degrees C) (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).

SOURCES

At the time of this review, few toxicological data were available for this specific vanadium compound. Vanadium is an essential element in chickens and rats; although it is present in human tissues, its essentiality has not been proven in humans (Friberg et al, 1986).
Some investigators believe that VANADIUM PENTOXIDE is the only toxic vanadium compound (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). However, one author stated that sodium metavanadate was twice as toxic as vanadium pentoxide in dietary studies in rats (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Oral LD50s in rats indicate that sodium vanadate is somewhat less toxic than vanadium pentoxide (RTECS , 1997).
Soluble vanadium compounds are generally more toxic than insoluble vanadium compounds (Friberg et al, 1986), and sodium metavanadate is water soluble. SODIUM METAVANADATE IS TOXIC BY ALL EXPOSURE ROUTES, WITH A PROBABLE LETHAL DOSE BEING IN THE MILLIGRAM/KILOGRAM RANGE (RTECS , 1997).
All vanadium compounds are respiratory tract irritants and vasoconstrictors. At fatal doses, they are CNS depressants.

ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS

Sodium metavanadate is absorbed through intact skin, and is a primary skin irritant (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).

Vanadium compounds are potent respiratory tract irritants, producing bronchospasm, dry or productive cough, chest pain, and bronchitis with acute exposure (Friberg et al, 1986). They are also eye irritants. Other signs of acute toxicity include pallor and tremor of the fingers and arms (Sax, 1984).

The mechanism of vanadium poisoning is complex. It can inhibit many enzymes, notably those involved in cellular energy metabolism and transport. In metabolic studies, sodium metavanadate increased blood glucose levels with acute exposure in rats (Kobayashi, 1975). It potentiated inhibition of human brain enzymes by ETHANOL (pp 323-328). When applied topically to the conjunctiva, it lowered intraocular pressure in rabbits and monkeys (Krupin, 1980).

CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS

Vanadium compounds are thought not to have chronic effects at commonly encountered exposure levels. Effects of chronic exposure resemble those of acute exposure. Respiratory effects of chronic exposure can include bronchospasm and bronchopneumonia (Friberg et al, 1986).

Vanadium compounds can be skin sensitizers, causing eczema (Friberg et al, 1986). GREEN TONGUE discoloration is a symptom of exposure, but not necessarily of toxicity (Friberg et al, 1986). Other systemic effects noted in the past, such as blood, kidney, and CNS effects, have not been found in subsequent studies (Sax, 1984).
