Selenium hexafluoride is used as a gaseous electric insulator (Budavari, 1989; Hathaway et al, 1991; ACGIH, 1991). It is also used during the production of selenium hydroxide, hydrofluoric acid, selenium, and nitrogen (NIOSH, 1994).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Selenium hexafluoride is poisonous by inhalation (Lewis, 1992).
- It is a severe pulmonary irritant in animals. Heavy exposure is expected to have the same effect in humans (Hathaway et al, 1991).
- Chronic manifestations of occupational intoxication with selenium hexafluoride are expected to mirror those seen after exposure to other selenium compounds; fluoride toxicity might also occur. Industrial selenium exposure is common amongst makers of arc light electrodes, electric rectifiers, and semiconductors (ACGIH, 1991).

TOXIC; may be fatal if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through skin. Vapors are extremely irritating and corrosive. Contact with gas or liquefied gas may cause burns, severe injury and/or frostbite. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with liquefied gas, thaw frosted parts with lukewarm water. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. In case of contact with Hydrogen fluoride, anhydrous (UN1052), flush skin and eyes with water for 5 minutes; then, for skin exposures rub on a calcium/jelly combination; for eyes flush with a water/calcium solution for 15 minutes. Keep victim warm and quiet. Keep victim under observation. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

- ANIMAL STUDIES - Exposure of four animal species (rabbit, guinea pig, rat, and mouse) to 10 ppm for 4 hours was fatal (ACGIH, 1991).
MAXIMUM TOLERATED EXPOSURE
- The maximum tolerated human exposure to this agent has not been delineated.
Exposure of four animal species (rabbit, guinea pig, rat, and mouse) to 5 ppm for 4 hours was not fatal but caused pulmonary edema, whereas 1 ppm produced no effects (ACGIH, 1991). Animals exposed to 5 ppm and 1 ppm for 1 hour daily for 5 days developed signs of pulmonary injury (ACGIH, 1991).

Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.
- Avoid breathing vapors. Keep upwind. Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus. Avoid bodily contact with the material. Wear appropriate chemical protective clothing. Wash away any material which may have contacted the body with copious amounts of water or soap and water. Vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than air and spread along ground. Some of these materials may react violently with water. Cylinders exposed to fire may vent and release toxic and/or corrosive gas through pressure relief devices. Containers may explode when heated. Ruptured cylinders may rocket.
Selenium hexafluoride is a nonflammable gas (NIOSH, 1994).

Water spray, fog or regular foam. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Do not get water inside containers. Damaged cylinders should be handled only by specialists.

Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Do not direct water at source of leak or safety devices; icing may occur. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire.

- Extinguish fire using agent suitable for type of surrounding fire. Material itself does not burn or burns with difficulty. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. - Selenium hexafluoride reacts with ammonia gas at 200 degrees C to give selenium, nitrogen and hydrogen fluoride (Budavari, 1989).
- Selenium hexafluoride hydrolyzes very slowly in cold water (NIOSH, 1994).

If there is a fire, or if a fire is involved, evacuation information presented under FIRE - PUBLIC SAFETY EVACUATION DISTANCES should be used. Generally, a small spill is one that involves a single, small package such as a drum containing up to approximately 200 liters, a small cylinder, or a small leak from a large package. A large spill is one that involves a spill from a large package, or multiple spills from many small packages. Suggested distances to protect from vapors of toxic-by-inhalation and/or water-reactive materials during the first 30 minutes following the spill.

SPILL OR LEAK PRECAUTIONS - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 125 (ERG, 2004) Fully encapsulating, vapor protective clothing should be worn for spills and leaks with no fire. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. If possible, turn leaking containers so that gas escapes rather than liquid. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. Do not direct water at spill or source of leak. Use water spray to reduce vapors or divert vapor cloud drift. Avoid allowing water runoff to conact spilled material. Isolate area until gas has dispersed.
RECOMMENDED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 125 (ERG, 2004) Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.
At the time of this review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices (HSDB , 1994).
Attempt to stop leak or spill if it can be done without undue personnel hazard. Use water spray to knock down vapors. Keep sparks, flames, and other sources of ignition away. Keep material out of water sources and sewers (AAR, 1992). If selenium hexafluoride is leaked, the following steps should be taken (HSDB , 1994): Ventilate area of leak. Stop flow of gas. If source of leak is a cylinder and the leak cannot be stopped in place, remove the leaking cylinder to a safe place in the open air, and repair the leak or allow the cylinder to empty.
