It is used as a rubber substitute, in thin sheeting, upholstery, tubing, belting, gaskets, piping, flooring, siding, and household products (HSDB).
PVC RESIN (POLYVINYL CHLORIDE), also called VINYL PLASTIC, has many commercial names. It is a white thermoplastic material and is available as film, fibers, lacquers, monofilaments, powder, pellets, granules, extruded forms, and sheets (HSDB). It has poor resistance to ketones, esters, hydrocarbons, and oils (HSDB). It disintegrates at approximately 160 degrees C (HSDB).

ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Inhalation of PVC FUMES caused pulmonary edema and hemorrhage in rats (HSDB). At the time of this review, no other acute exposure studies were found, but it is assumed that both the dust and fumes would be irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract.
- This review deals with the hazards of the finished product and excludes a detailed discussion of VINYL CHLORIDE MONOMER (VCM), which is known to cause human cancer. The major hazards of PVC are inhalation of the DUST, exposure to RESIDUAL VINYL CHLORIDE MONOMER, and inhalation of PYRROLYSIS PRODUCTS, which can include hydrogen chloride, phosgene, and carbon monoxide. The possible effects of PLASTICIZERS or STABILIZERS should be considered in the evaluation of any PVC product. These additives can include organic compounds of tin, lead, and cadmium.
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- There are several reports of pneumoconiosis and airway obstruction in humans exposed to PVC dust (Ernst, 1985; Vertkin & Mamontov, 1973; Szende, 1971). More than 50 cases of ACRO-OSTEOLYSIS have occurred in persons scraping PVC tanks (HSDB). SCLERODERMA and other skin conditions have also occurred in PVC tank scrapers (Sakabe, 1975). Acro-osteolysis and scleroderma are most likely due to residual vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).
- MEAT WRAPPER'S ASTHMA is caused by exposure to the PVC fumes during thermal cutting (Vandervort & Brooks, 1977). The causative agent might also involve fumes from the adhesive on package labels.
- Inhalation of PVC dust caused pulmonary lesions in rats and guinea pigs (HSDB; (Frongia, 1974). Fibrotic lung changes and altered pulmonary function were seen (HSDB). Lung lesions remained for at least 15 weeks after exposure ceased (Richards, 1981). In monkeys, inhalation for 22 months produced a benign pneumoconiosis with accumulations in the lungs, but no changes in pulmonary function (Groth, 1981). One case of occupational asthma due to chronic exposure to UNHEATED PVC DUST has been reported (Lee et al, 1989).
