POTASSIUM FLUORIDE is used in rodenticides, fungicides, electroplating, manufacture of glass and vitreous enamel, and as a chemical reagent (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).
POTASSIUM FLUORIDE is a white, odorless, crystalline, deliquescent powder solid with a sharp, salty taste (Sax, 1984). It is soluble in water (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Fluoride is ubiquitous in nature, and humans have a significant daily intake of fluoride ion in food and water. Fluorine is the most electronegative element, and fluoride ion is very reactive. The hallmarks of acute fluoride toxicity are irritation and corrosivity. With chronic exposure, FLUOROSIS and OSTEOSCLEROSIS can develop. Fluorosis, which can occur from exposure to greater than 6 mg F per day, is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, weakness, and stiffness in the joints (HSDB, 1997). Osteosclerosis is a particular pattern of increased density in the bones, thought to be due to fluorapatite replacing hydroxyapatite (HSDB, 1997). Fluoride ion can inhibit many enzymes, including those required for cellular respiration (HSDB, 1997). Potassium fluoride is most likely very toxic in acute exposure. The ACGIH has established a Biological Exposure Index (BEI) for FLUORIDES. Refer to the BIOMONITORING section for more information.

TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Symptoms of acute fluoride poisoning following ingestion include salivation, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, nervousness, convulsions, muscle pain, hypotension, central nervous system (CNS) depression, dizziness, weakness, loss of coordination, gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, muscle weakness, collapse, breathing difficulty, difficulty speaking, motor unrest, thirst, weak pulse, disturbed color vision, and loss of consciousness (HSDB, 1997). Death is usually from respiratory paralysis or cardiac failure (HSDB, 1997). Sodium fluoride exerts a direct toxicity on the heart muscle (HSDB, 1997), and potassium fluoride would be predicted to have similar effects.
- Fluoride is particularly dangerous when ingested because it is almost completely absorbed from the GI tract. Inhalation of the dust can produce respiratory tract irritation and epistaxis (at airborne concentrations greater than 10 mg/m(3)) (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). It is also a strong irritant of the skin and eyes.
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Chronic exposure to fluoride at doses greater than 6 mg per day can produce FLUOROSIS, a condition characterized by nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea or constipation, anemia, weakness, and stiffness in the joints. Chronic exposure can also result in OSTEOSCLEROSIS, sometimes with a latent period as long as 20 years (ACGIH, 1986). Osteosclerosis is an increased bone density in characteristic patterns (Bishop, 1936). Calcification of ligaments can also be involved, making movement stiff and painful (HSDB, 1997).
- The daily intake of fluoride can be significant, especially in vegetarians and persons living in areas with high fluoride content in the drinking water. The concentration of fluoride in the plasma increases with age (Hanhijarvi, 1975). It decreases during pregnancy, and is elevated in hemodialysis patients (Hodge & MacGregor, 1982).
- In one epidemiological study, there was a correlation between fluoride content in drinking water and heart disease (Jansen & Thomson, 1974). Other effects noted with chronic exposure to the similar compound, sodium fluoride, are allergic dermatitis and asthma (Saric, 1986).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
