USES/FORMS/SOURCES
The tacky properties of the emulsion make it useful in adhesives, binders, cement additives, sealants, sizing, and as an important vehicle for latex paints (HSDB , 1997; Lewis, 1993). Polyvinyl acetate used in cosmetics is an emulsion which may contain 55% to 60% resin (Andersen, 1996).
POLYVINYL ACETATE is a colorless, transparent, thermoplastic high polymer solid which is odorless and tasteless (Lewis, 1993; ILO, 1983; HSDB , 1997). The molecular weight may vary from 5,000 to 1,500,000 daltons (Clayton & Clayton, 1994). It is soluble in ethanol, acetone, and chloroform, and is insoluble in hydrocarbons, higher alcohols, and water (HSDB , 1997; Lewis, 1993). Polyvinyl acetate is relatively stable in light and air (ILO, 1983; Lewis, 1993). It can hydrolyze in water to form polyvinyl alcohol (HSDB , 1997). It is available commercially as an emulsion or resin. Polyvinyl acetate is generally regarded as being relatively nontoxic; however, it may be formulated with various SOLVENTS (Clayton & Clayton, 1994). Emulsions also may contain thickeners, plasticizers, biocides, and fillers, which may contribute to the toxicity (HSDB , 1997). In evaluating the total picture of toxicity from mixed formulations, the possible contribution of other components should be taken into account.
POLYVINYL ACETATE is formed from the polymerization of vinyl acetate in the presence of peroxides (HSDB , 1997), and many commercial products called "polyvinyl acetate" are copolymers with one of several other substances (Clayton & Clayton, 1994). Therefore, both the molecular weight and chemical composition of polyvinyl acetate may vary.

ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Polyvinyl acetate was essentially nontoxic by the ingestion exposure route in rats and mice (oral LD's greater than 25 grams/kg) (RTECS , 1997). It was a skin irritant in rabbits, but not in a controlled patch test in humans (Clayton & Clayton, 1994). A cosmetic-grade polyvinyl acetate emulsion was not irritating to the skin of human volunteers (Andersen, 1996).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Polyvinyl acetate was not a skin sensitizer in human patch testing (Clayton & Clayton, 1994). Cosmetic-grade polyvinyl acetate emulsion was not a dermal sensitizer in human testing (Andersen, 1996).
- Rats and mice given 0.01 times the oral LD50 dose of polyvinyl acetate for 12 months developed necrotic changes in the digestive system and organs, but survived (Clayton & Clayton, 1994) Subbotin et al, 1975).
