PLATINUM is used in laboratories, electronics, jewelry, and as a catalyst in chemical synthesis, petroleum refining, and air pollution control (ACGIH, 1986).
PLATINUM is a silver gray, malleable, ductile precious metal. It is very resistant to reaction with water and mineral acids, but does react with halogens, cyanides, sulfur, and strong alkalis (ACGIH, 1986). This review specifically covers PLATINUM DUST. Platinum dust is a black powder. There is little toxicological data on platinum metal, and even less on the dust. Much of the literature on platinum has been concerned with the soluble salts, which are potent sensitizers. Platinum salts are more hazardous than platinum metal or dust. The pure metallic form is relatively nontoxic (van der Voert & de Wolff, 1996; Farago et al, 1998). Platinum ions should not be formed from metallic platinum in the body (Barlow & Sullivan, 1982). Studies reporting allergies from exposure to platinum were generally in employees in platinum refineries who also had exposure to platinum salts. The toxicology of platinum and its salts has been reviewed (Fairhall, 1946; Roshchin, 1984; Ruegger, 1995).

ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- No adverse health effects have been reported from exposure solely to platinum dust which is generally considered to be biologically inert and not allergenic (ILO, 1983; Farago et al, 1998). One review mentioned that platinum can cause skin irritation (Anon, 1983), and another stated that it is a respiratory tract irritant (Lane, 1965); however, original studies reporting these effects were not found at the time of this review.
- As an inert dust, platinum dust would be predicted to be irritating to the respiratory tract from mechanical action. Inhalation of respirable particles might result either in deposits in the lungs or in systemic distribution in the body after ingestion by pulmonary macrophages.
- In one rat study, radioactive Platinum-191 was distributed throughout the body after inhalation (with some oral exposure as well), and the half-life required for platinum clearance from the lungs was approximately 8 days (Moore, 1975).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Allergic rhinitis and bronchitis have been reported in platinum refinery workers, but these effects were thought to be due to exposure to the soluble salts of platinum (ILO, 1983; Ruegger, 1995). PLATINOSIS is a term used to describe this spectrum of allergic effects, which include occupational asthma (ILO, 1983). In another review, platinum was mentioned as a skin sensitizer, but the salts were probably involved (Lane, 1965).
- Metallic platinum is generally considered to be biologically inert and not allergenic, although concern has been expressed that platinum in road dust (from use of platinum catalysts in vehicle engines) may become solubilized and enter the food chain from soils, sediments, and water (Farago et al, 1998). However, there is no evidence of adverse human health effects due to platinum dust in the environment.
- Platinum was cleared more slowly from skin than from serum; the half-life in skin was approximately 30 days in patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy (Gorodetsky et al, 1993).
