Flavoring for mineral waters and syrups, industrial solvent, aerosol additive. Also used as a solvent for lacquers and paint, photographic film, leather polish, nail polish, dry cleaning, repellant and insecticide (HSDB , 2001). The main source of occupational exposure is from its use as a solvent (HSDB , 1990).
The available grades of the mixture are commercial (85 to 88% pure), high test (85 to 88%), technical (90 to 95%), pure (95 to 99%), and special antibiotic grade (Sax & Lewis, 1987). Amyl acetate is available generally as a mixture of isomers, principally iso-amyl acetate (3-methylbutyl acetate), sec-amyl acetate (2-methylbutyl acetate), and n-amyl acetate.
Amyl acetate occurs naturally in bananas, pears, yeast, baked potatoes, fried bacon, and in the honeybee's natural alarm system (HSDB , 1990).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Eye, mucous membrane, skin irritant; narcosis, headache, nausea and vomiting may occur.

May cause toxic effects if inhaled or absorbed through skin. Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- The main effects of acute inhalation exposure are eye, nose, throat, and skin irritation at approximately 200 ppm (NIOSH/OSHA). At higher concentrations, n-amyl acetate is a CNS depressant.
- Headache, nausea, weakness, drowsiness, and unconsciousness can occur from the CNS depressant effects. It altered the electroretinogram in guinea pigs acutely exposed to an airborne concentration of 320 mg/L (Gorgone, 1970).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Little is known about effects of chronic exposure to n-amyl acetate in humans or experimental animals. Several occupational studies have reported eye complaints in chronically exposed workers, ranging from weakened vision (including atrophy of the optic nerve) (Inserra, 1969) to eye pain (Spagna & Malfitano, 1972).
- CNS symptoms and ECG changes were noted in n-amyl acetate exposed Italian furniture workers (Querci, 1970). Another Italian study revealed no remarkable findings on EEGs (Spagna & Malfitano, 1972). Mood changes were reported in workers exposed to airborne concentrations of 20 to 80 mg/L (Valvo, 1967).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Wash skin with soap and water. Keep victim warm and quiet. In case of burns, immediately cool affected skin for as long as possible with cold water. Do not remove clothing if adhering to skin. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

MAXIMUM TOLERATED EXPOSURE
200 ppm of N-amyl acetate produced respiratory irritation; 950 ppm of iso-amyl acetate produced respiratory irritation, headache, and weakness, 1000 ppm of sec-amyl acetate produced serious toxic effects and is considered immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH value) (NIOSH , 1996). Noticeable eye irritation occurred at 300 ppm, and higher concentrations produced a burning sensation in the eyes (HSDB).

All equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. A vapor suppressing foam may be used to reduce vapors. Absorb or cover with dry earth, sand or other non-combustible material and transfer to containers. Use clean non-sparking tools to collect absorbed material.
