Phosphorus pentoxide is used commercially as a drying, dehydrating, and condensing agent in organic synthesis, sugar refining, fire extinguishing, and in preparing special glass and surfactants (HSDB , 2000).
Phosphorus pentoxide, also called PHOSPHORIC ANHYDRIDE and PHOSPHORUS OXIDE, is a white, fuming, nonflammable crystalline powder solid which is strongly deliquescent (absorbs water) in air (EOSH, 1982). It has a pungent, unpleasant odor (EOSH, 1982). It is formed by burning yellow phosphorus in dry air or oxygen (Clayton & Clayton, 1993). Phosphorus pentoxide is soluble in sulfuric acid (EOSH, 1982). It is incompatible with formic acid, hydrogen fluoride, inorganic bases, metals, iodides, and oxidants (Lewis, 1996). It reacts violently when in contact with WATER, CALCIUM OXIDE, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE, PROPARGYL ALCOHOL, AND SODIUM CARBONATE (HSDB , 2000). Phosphorus pentoxide reacts with water to form PHOSPHORIC ACID with the liberation of a large amount of heat, sometimes sufficient to ignite flammable substances (HSDB , 2000). The toxicity of phosphoric pentoxide is thus essentially that of phosphoric acid.
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Phosphorus pentoxide reacts with water in the air or body to form phosphoric acid. It is an irritant and corrosive. Significant exposures can also cause metabolic acidosis, hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia. Similar effects would be expected from chronic exposure.

CORROSIVE and/or TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors, dusts or substance may cause severe injury, burns, or death. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Reaction with water may generate much heat which will increase the concentration of fumes in the air. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Phosphorus pentoxide is irritating and corrosive to the eyes, mucous membranes, skin, and any tissue with which it comes in contact (ILO, 1998). Even small amounts in the eye can cause permanent corneal opacity (HSDB , 2000). There seems to be a large interspecies variation in susceptibility to its acute lethal effects, with acute LC50s ranging from 61 mg/m3 in the guinea pig to 1689 mg/m3 in the rabbit (RTECS , 2000). Inhalation can cause acute pulmonary edema (ILO, 1998).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- The only occupational study found involved persons engaged in the manufacture of phosphoric acid from phosphorus pentoxide. With an average airborne exposure level of 0.32 mg/m(3), there were complaints of inflammation of the respiratory tract and oral mucosa and skin burns. There were also unspecified abnormal findings in the liver, blood, and bone marrow (Bartalini & Vaggi, 1958).
- Phosphorus poisoning has not occurred from chronic occupational exposure to phosphorus pentoxide (Clayton & Clayton, 1982).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Removal of solidified molten material from skin requires medical assistance. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

Phosphorus pentoxide fumes at concentrations of 0.8 to 5.4 mg/m(3) were noticeable but did not cause discomfort in human volunteers (ACGIH, 1986). The resulting phosphoric acid produced from phosphorus pentoxide would be a weak irritant at concentrations ranging from 15 to 35%, a strong irritant at 35 to 60%, and corrosive at greater than 60% (CPSC, 1982). Occupational exposures in the range of 0.32 mg/m(3) produced complaints of skin burns and inflammation of the oral mucosa and respiratory tract (Bartalini & Vaggi, 1958).
