Phenylmercuric nitrate is used as a topical application to skin or mucosae, in vaginal preparations, for the disinfection of instruments, as a preservative in pharmaceuticals, as a germicide and fungicide, as a tree wound dressing, in veterinary medicine, and as a local antibacterial agent (HSDB , 1992).
Phenylmercuric nitrate is a crystalline solid (Sax & Lewis, 1989). It is a Federal Drug Administration over-the-counter drug (Sax & Lewis, 1989).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Phenylmercuric nitrate is a poison by intravenous and subcutaneous routes.
- Skin exposure to a concentrated solution of phenylmercury compounds may cause chemical burns with blistering.
- The following clinical effects information is for ORGANIC MERCURY. Acute neurologic and gastrointestinal symptoms may occur at varying intervals up to several weeks after oral ingestion of contaminated shellfish and fish, mercurial fungicide-treated grain, and after inhalation of vaporized organomercurials.
GASTROINTESTINAL - Irritation with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur. NEUROLOGIC - With aromatic mercurials, such as phenylmercury, gastrointestinal symptoms can be associated with malaise, myalgia, and may mimic viral syndrome. Alkylmercurials, such as methylmercury, possess gastrointestinal effects but these are minor compared to the severe neurologic toxicity: paresthesias of the lips, tongue and extremities, confusion, hallucinosis, irritability, sleep disturbances, ataxis, memory loss, slurred speech, delayed achievement of developmental milestones, abnormal tendon reflexes, auditory defects, concentric narrowing of visual fields, emotional instability, inability to concentrate, stupor, coma and death.
- Chronic toxicity is likely following repeated environmental exposure and consists mainly of the neurologic toxicities.
Patients receiving regular injections of gamma globulin are potentially at risk of mercury toxicity because of the merthiolate content. Chronic inhalation of mercury containing vapors from phenylmercuric acetate contained in latex paint has resulted in signs of acrodynia.

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance;give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

POLLUTION HAZARD
- Phenylmercuric nitrate does not appear to be used or produced in large commercial amounts in the United States; therefore, it is not expected to be released to the environment from anthropogenic sources in this country (HSDB , 1992).
ENVIRONMENTAL FATE AND KINETICS
OTHER TERRESTRIAL FATE If released to soil, phenylmercuric nitrate is expected to be transformed into other organic and inorganic mercury compounds by photolysis on soil surfaces or by reaction with reducing agents such as organic materials, wood, and metals found in soil (HSDB , 1992). The environmental fate of phenylmercuric nitrate is expected to be analogous to that of phenylmercuric acetate since they are both water soluble salts of phenylmercury (HSDB , 1992). Phenylmercuric acetate added to non-autoclaved soil (65 to 76.2 mg Hg per pot and aerated 35 days) underwent 0.2 to 0.4 percent loss due to volatilization, 12.1 to 22.3 percent uncharacterized loss speculated to be due to irreversible binding or physical adsorption to soil or conversion to metallic mercury or sulfide which had not volatilized, 2.5 to 2.9 percent loss due to conversion to extractable Hg(+2) compounds, and 60.5 to 69.7 percent recovery of original methylmercury(1) (HSDB , 1992). Losses of phenylmercuric acetate in autoclaved soil were found to be essentially the same as in non-autoclaved soil (HSDB , 1992). Soil adsorption/mobility: Phenylmercury spray residues are strongly adsorbed onto soil clay particles. Maximum adsorption occurred at pH 6 with significant reductions at pH 5 or 7 (HSDB , 1992).
AQUATIC FATE: If released to water, it is expected that phenylmercuric nitrate would be transformed into other organic and inorganic mercury compounds by photolysis at water surfaces (half-life 20 hours) or by reaction with reducing agents (ie, metals, organic materials) found in natural waters (HSDB , 1992). ATMOSPHERIC FATE: If released to the atmosphere, photolysis, washout, and dry deposition may be important fate processes (HSDB , 1992). BIODEGRADATION: All forms of mercury (metal, vapor, inorganic, or organic) are converted to methyl mercury (HSDB , 1992).
