Pentachloroethane is used as a chemical intermediate in chemical synthesis, a solvent for fats, grease, and oil in metal cleaning, in separating impurities from coal, and to a small extent in dry cleaning and soil sterilization (EPA, 1985; Clayton & Clayton, 1994; Plunkett, 1976; ITI, 1985). It has little commercial use (Clayton & Clayton, 1994).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Pentachloroethane exposure causes irritation of eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Central nervous system depression may occur. Death may occur from respiratory arrest or circulatory collapse. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, and occasionally, seizures may develop. Liver, lung, and kidney injury have been described in exposed experimental animals only.

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance;give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
Methods to decrease absorption may be beneficial, but emesis should not be induced due to the potential for coma, convulsions, and esophageal irritation. Move victims of inhalation exposure from the toxic environment and administer supplemental oxygen with assisted ventilation if required. Exposed skin and eyes should be copiously flushed with water.

MINIMUM LETHAL EXPOSURE
In experimental animals, the minimum lethal airborne concentration was about 35 milligrams per liter (Lazarew, 1929). The lethal concentration in air for mice is 4,200 parts per million (Windholz et al, 1983).

SUMMARY
Wear full protective clothing and a positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) when working in the vicinity of spills or leaks or when fighting fires. Special protective clothing may not provide adequate thermal protection. Structural fire fighters clothing is NOT sufficient protection against this material (DOT, 1993). For normal handling operations, insure adequate ventilation and wear overalls, rubber gloves, chemical goggles, and a chemical cartridge respirator (Plunkett, 1976; ITI, 1985).

Pentachloroethane is not flammable by standard tests in air (Clayton & Clayton, 1982). Pentachloroethane presents a moderate fire hazard when exposed to heat or flames and a moderate explosion hazard by spontaneous chemical reaction (Sax, 1989).

Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. Cover with plastic sheet to prevent spreading. Absorb or cover with dry earth, sand or other non-combustible material and transfer to containers. DO NOT GET WATER INSIDE CONTAINERS.

Small spills can be cleaned up by absorbing into paper towels or similar material, evaporating under a hood, and then burning the paper (ITI, 1985).

- There is no evidence available that indicates pentachloroethane is a natural product. Formation during combustion or incineration of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waste products is a potential source of pentachloroethane release to the environment (HSDB, 2003).
