Nickel oxide is used in catalysts, fuel cell electrodes, stainless and heat-resistant steels, other steel alloys, nickel alloys, cast iron, painting on porcelain, electroplating, for coloring and decoloring glass, and for other miscellaneous uses (HSDB, 2002; (Budavari, 1996; Lewis, 1993).
NICKEL OXIDE is a green powder or greenish-black cubic crystalline solid manufactured by heating nickel to above 400 degrees C in the presence of oxygen. The green form is insoluble in water and is soluble in acids; the black form is insoluble in both water and acids (Clayton & Clayton, 1994). It reacts violently when in contact with iodine and hydrogen sulfide. It may autoignite if exposed to air, and may re-ignite after fire is extinguished. Dry nickel catalyst may react violently with water (HSDB, 2002). Different commercially-available nickel oxide forms had greatly different solubilities in aqueous and physiological conditions. It may be difficult to arrive at precise estimates of the solubility (and perhaps the systemic absorption) of nickel oxide in the respiratory tract (Yamada et al, 1993).

ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Exposure to nickel oxide dust would be predicted to irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract by frictional action.
- Nickel oxide is very toxic to laboratory animals exposed by inhalation; as little as 20 mg causing death within 20 days (Mogilevskaya, 1962).
- Acute and chronic nickel oxide exposure can cause chronic lung effects, because of slow pulmonary clearance. Organ deposition studies in experimental animals revealed significant nickel accumulation in the lungs, but little or no deposition in other organs (English, 1981; Kodama, 1985; Tanaki, 1986). The half-life of nickel oxide in the lungs has been estimated to be 11.5 and 21 months with exposure to particle sizes of 1.2 and 4.0 microns, respectively (Tanaka, 1985).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Chronic exposure (1.5 years) killed alveolar macrophages and depressed alveolar clearance mechanisms (Glaser, 1986). Following 4 weeks of nickel oxide aerosol exposure, the humoral immune response in rats was depressed (3:479-481).
- In hamsters, lifetime exposure to nickel oxide at an airborne concentration of 53 mcg/L caused pneumoconiosis (Paton & Allison, 1972). One study reported that inhalation of nickel oxide for only 3 months caused atherosclerosis in rats (pp 146-156).
- Nickel and some nickel compounds are known to be potent skin sensitizers in humans, with approximately 10 percent of the population reacting. No reports of dermatitis caused by nickel oxide exposure were found at the time of this review, however.
