USES/FORMS/SOURCES
Methyl silicate is used to coat the screens of television picture tubes and may be used as a silicone intermediate, in coatings formulated to resist corrosion, in mold binders and in catalyst preparations (ACGIH, 1996a). The compound may also be used as a bonding agent in formulation of paints and lacquers as well as an agent to close pores in cement, concrete and ceramic materials (Clayton & Clayton, 1994).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Methyl silicate may be toxic by inhalation and ingestion and is irritating to the skin.
- It is a SEVERE EYE IRRITANT and may cause corneal damage and necrosis of the eyelid; these effects may be delayed in onset. Blindness and eye loss have been reported.
- Pulmonary edema and fatal damage to the lungs and kidneys may also occur.

TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors, dusts or substance may cause severe injury, burns, or death. Bromoacetates and chloroacetates are extremely irritating/lachrymators. Reaction with water or moist air will release toxic, corrosive or flammable gases. Reaction with water may generate much heat that will increase the concentration of fumes in the air. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

SUMMARY
- FIRST AID - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 155 (ERG, 2004)
Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
FIRST AID EYE EXPOSURE - Immediately wash the eyes with large amounts of water, occasionally lifting the lower and upper lids. Get medical attention immediately. Contact lenses should not be worn when working with this chemical. DERMAL EXPOSURE - Wash the contaminated skin with soap and water. INHALATION EXPOSURE - Move the exposed person to fresh air at once. If breathing has stopped, perform artificial respiration. Keep the affected person warm and at rest. Get medical attention as soon as possible. ORAL EXPOSURE - If this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention immediately. TARGET ORGANS - Eyes, respiratory system, and kidneys (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 2007).
GENERAL Move victims of inhalation exposure from the toxic environment and administer 100% humidified supplemental oxygen with assisted ventilation as required. Exposed skin and eyes should be copiously flushed with water. Ingestion may result in significant esophageal or gastrointestinal tract irritation or burns, and EMESIS SHOULD NOT BE INDUCED. Cautious gastric lavage followed by administration of activated charcoal may be of benefit if the patient is seen soon after the exposure.
INHALATION EXPOSURE INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm. If bronchospasm and wheezing occur, consider treatment with inhaled sympathomimetic agents. ACUTE LUNG INJURY: Maintain ventilation and oxygenation and evaluate with frequent arterial blood gases and/or pulse oximetry monitoring. Early use of PEEP and mechanical ventilation may be needed.
DERMAL EXPOSURE DECONTAMINATION: Remove contaminated clothing and jewelry and place them in plastic bags. Wash exposed areas with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes with gentle sponging to avoid skin breakdown. A physician may need to examine the area if irritation or pain persists (Burgess et al, 1999). Treat dermal irritation or burns with standard topical therapy. Patients developing dermal hypersensitivity reactions may require treatment with systemic or topical corticosteroids or antihistamines.
EYE EXPOSURE DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility. CONSULTATION - Because of the potential for severe ocular injury following direct eye contact with this material, prolonged flushing and early ophthalmologic consultation are advisable.
ORAL EXPOSURE Because of the potential for gastrointestinal tract irritation, DO NOT induce emesis. Significant esophageal or gastrointestinal tract irritation or burns may occur following ingestion. The possible benefit of early removal of some ingested material by cautious gastric lavage must be weighed against potential complications of bleeding or perforation. GASTRIC LAVAGE: Consider after ingestion of a potentially life-threatening amount of poison if it can be performed soon after ingestion (generally within 1 hour). Protect airway by placement in the head down left lateral decubitus position or by endotracheal intubation. Control any seizures first. ACTIVATED CHARCOAL: Administer charcoal as a slurry (240 mL water/30 g charcoal). Usual dose: 25 to 100 g in adults/adolescents, 25 to 50 g in children (1 to 12 years), and 1 g/kg in infants less than 1 year old. Observe patients with ingestion carefully for the possible development of esophageal or gastrointestinal tract irritation or burns. If signs or symptoms of esophageal irritation or burns are present, consider endoscopy to determine the extent of injury.

STORAGE
Only containers which can be tightly closed should be used to store methyl silicate. These should be kept in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from any ignition source. (NFPA, 1994; Sittig, 1991).

Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.
- Exposure to methyl silicate vapor can cause serious eye damage (Grant & Schuman, 1993). Skin and eye contact should be prevented by wearing appropriate protective equipment specifically recommended by the equipment manufacturer (NIOSH , 1997; Sittig, 1991). Workers should change clothes if their clothing becomes contaminated and wash after each work shift. Eyewash fountains must be provided by employers in areas where employees could be exposed (NIOSH , 1997). Use positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus for respiratory protection (NFPA, 1994) Sittig, 1991).

POTENTIAL FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARDS - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 155 (ERG, 2004) HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air: indoors, outdoors, and sewers explosion hazards. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Those substances designated with a "P" may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire. Substance will react with water (some violently) releasing flammable, toxic or corrosive gases and runoff. Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated or if contaminated with water.
Methyl silicate is flammable and should be kept away from heat and flame. This compound will also react with oxidizers and metal hexafluorides such as molybdenum, tungsten, and rhenium (Lewis, 1996).

Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Do not get water inside containers. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. - Carbon dioxide, dry chemicals or some foams are appropriate extinguishing agents for fires involving methyl silicate (NFPA, 1994). If the compound is on fire, the fire should not be extinguished until the source is controlled (AAR, 1996). Water spray should be used to keep containers cool. However, water will react with methyl silicate to form a corrosive solution. Fires should be approached from upwind to avoid toxic and hazardous vapors or gases. Since methyl silicate vapors are heavier than air, these vapors may flash back to their source from an ignition point (NFPA, 1994).

- If heated to decomposition, methyl silicate will produce irritating smoke and fumes (Lewis, 1996).

If there is a fire, or if a fire is involved, evacuation information presented under FIRE - PUBLIC SAFETY EVACUATION DISTANCES should be used. Generally, a small spill is one that involves a single, small package such as a drum containing up to approximately 200 liters, a small cylinder, or a small leak from a large package. A large spill is one that involves a spill from a large package, or multiple spills from many small packages. SPILL OR LEAK PRECAUTIONS - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 155 (ERG, 2004) ELIMINATE all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area). All equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. A vapor suppressing foam may be used to reduce vapors. FOR CHLOROSILANES, use AFFF alcohol-resistant medium expansion foam to reduce vapors. DO NOT GET WATER on spilled substance or inside containers. Use water spray to reduce vapors or divert vapor cloud drift. Avoid allowing water runoff to contact spilled material. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas.
RECOMMENDED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 155 (ERG, 2004) Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.
Because of the hazardous nature of methyl silicate, personnel may need to be evacuated and the spilled material isolated to prevent exposure. Any ignition sources must be eliminated. Vapors may be controlled with water spray. Any runoff from the release must be controlled and spilled material must be cleaned up and disposed of properly (NFPA, 1994). Spills must be prevented from entering sewers due to the possibility of explosion (Sittig, 1991). Dikes to contain a release may be constructed from sand bags, soil, foamed polyurethane or concrete. The spilled methyl silicate can be absorbed using commercial sorbents, powdered cement or fly ash. If the spill reaches a body of water, oil spill control booms can be used to control the flow (AAR, 1996).
