ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Manganese dioxide would be predicted to be an eye and respiratory tract irritant from mechanical action. Inhalation of fresh manganese dioxide fume can produce flu-like symptoms similar to those of metal fume fever. See the review on WELDING for more information.
- Inhalation of manganese dust reduced the number of pulmonary macrophages and increased susceptibility to pulmonary infection in mice (Adkins, 1980; Adkins, 1980b) and guinea pigs (Bergstrom, 1977).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Chronic exposure to this and other manganese compounds can lead to manganese poisoning, called MANGANISM. It is characterized by CNS effects including languor, sleepiness, weakness, a mask-like appearance of the face, emotional instability, spastic gait, and anemia.
- Repeated inhalation of manganese dioxide dust can cause MANGANESE PNEUMONITIS and increase susceptibility to pneumonia.
- Inhalation of manganese dioxide for 2 years at an airborne concentration of 30 mg/m(3) caused no abnormal behavior in monkeys, but did lower the dopamine concentration in the brain (Bird, 1984), findings consistent with the similarities in humans between manganese poisoning and Parkinsons disease.
- In rats, inhalation exposure caused pulmonary fibrosis (7; Cempel, 1978) and anemia (pp 98-106). Exposed mice had altered behavior (Morganti, 1985). When administered by inhalation to rats and monkeys at an airborne concentration of 1,000 mcg/m(3) for 9 months, there were no adverse effects (Ulrich et al, 1979).
