IDENTIFIERS
USES/FORMS/SOURCES
Linalool is a synthetic flavoring substance and adjuvant; used as a fragrance raw material and source for acetate production (Lewis, 1996). Linalool is a tertiary alcohol used primarily as a fragrance and food additive in soups, perfumes, creams, detergents, lotions, ice cream, candy, gelatins, puddings, carbonated beverages, and chewing gum (Powers & Beasley, 1985; Opdyke, 1975).
Linalool is an acrylic alcohol that appears to be a terpene derivative but has a broken 6 carbon ring (Tyler et al, 1976). Linalool occurs in the following volatile oils: Linalae oil (6%), Ceylon cinnamon oil, sassafras oil, orange flower oil, bergamot oil, Artemisia balchanorum oil, ylang ylang oil, spearmint oil (S Budavari , 2001; Osol & Farrar, 1955).
Linalool is found in nature as a monoterpene in volatile oils occurring in various herbs, leaves, flowers, wood, and citrus products (Powers & Beasley, 1985).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Linalool is a volatile oil with low oral and dermal toxicity. The expected primary effects are CNS and respiratory depression and mild dermatitis. Non-allergic, toxic reactions are unlikely unless there is exposure to the pure compound. Almost all data are from animal experimentation.

MAXIMUM TOLERATED EXPOSURE
A toxic dose has not been established for man and no human ingestion cases could be found. Based on animal MTD and LD50 data, serious toxicity should not occur until greater than 1 gram/kilogram has been ingested. This is an estimate only. The maximum tolerated dose for mice was 3 grams per kilogram when injected six times intraperitoneally during a two week period (Stoner et al, 1973).
