Lead acetate is used in the dyeing and printing of cottons, in varnishes, chrome pigments, pesticide manufacturing, antifouling paints, analytical reagents, and hair dyes, and as an astringent and water repellent (HSDB; (Lewis, 1993; Budavari, 1996). Because of its solubility, lead acetate has been used as the model inorganic lead compound for many toxicological studies.
LEAD ACETATE is a white, powdered, granular, crystalline or flake solid; the commercial grade may be gray or brown lumps (Lewis, 1993). The TRIHYDRATE (CAS 6080-56-4) is the commercial product; lead acetate also occurs in the ANHYDROUS form (CAS 301-04-2).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Acute lead poisoning is rare (HSDB). Lead acetate can produce encrustation of the cornea with direct eye exposure (HSDB). Ingestion can result in lead colic, headache, abdominal cramps, muscle weakness, depression, coma, and death (HSDB).
- Lead is of concern because it has cumulative and irreversible effects on the nervous system, hematopoietic system, reproductive system, gastrointestinal system, and kidneys (Clayton & Clayton, 1994). The estimated lethal oral dose is 1 teaspoon to 1 pint for a normal adult (HSDB).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- The effects of chronic exposure to lead acetate are similar to those of chronic LEAD exposure.
- The hallmarks of chronic lead poisoning are peripheral motor polyneuropathy, ANEMIA, KIDNEY INJURY, MALE AND FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS, and DEVELOPMENTAL DEFECTS IN THE UNBORN and OFFSPRING.
- Lead acetate caused anemia in rats (Cardona & Lessler, 1974), disturbed visual acuity in monkeys (Bowman & Bushnell, 1980), and produced behavioral effects in rats (Anon, 1979) Cory-Slechta et al, 1981).
- Lead acetate did not affect the steady-state levels of monoamine neurotransmitters when given at an intraperitoneal dose of 1 or 8 mg/kg for 20 days to newborn rats, but some aspects of dopamine transmission were affected in the high-dose group (Luthman et al, 1994).
- Lead acetate has inhibited cholinesterase in the brain of mice, producing hyperexcitable behavior (Carroll, 1977). When given to the mothers, lead acetate caused a propensity to adrenalin-induced cardiac arrhythmias in rat pups (Williams, 1977) and retarded nerve development in suckling rats (HSDB).
- Lead acetate caused kidney damage in rats and resultant hypertension secondary to kidney malfunction (Avia, 1980). It depressed immunity in rats (Tovmasyan, 1977).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance;give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection.
