USES/FORMS/SOURCES
Hexamethyldisilazane is used primarily in the semiconductor and electronics industry as an adhesion promoter and to improve photoresists on silicon. It is the most commonly used agent for silyation. It is also used as a chemical intermediate and for deactivation of chromatographic packings (Ashford, 1994; Budavari, 1996a; Lewis, 1997a).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Hexamethyldisilazane is irritating to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Inhalation of vapors may cause irritation and burns to the nose, throat, and respiratory tract; wheezing; pulmonary edema; chemical pneumonitis; or spasm or edema of the larynx or bronchi. Symptoms following dermal exposure may include redness, burning, and swelling. Contact with the eyes can cause stinging, lacrimation, redness and swelling, and corneal injury.
- Signs and symptoms following ingestion of hexamethyldisilazane may include severe stomach and intestinal irritation; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; abdominal pain; hematemesis; and burns of the mouth, throat, and esophagus. Hypotension and shock may occur from severe tissue injury.
- Decreased immune response, respiratory and CNS depression, tremor, and muscle weakness have been observed in experimental animals.

Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.

SUMMARY

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Wash skin with soap and water. In case of burns, immediately cool affected skin for as long as possible with cold water. Do not remove clothing if adhering to skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
INHALATION EXPOSURE - INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm. If bronchospasm and wheezing occur, consider treatment with inhaled sympathomimetic agents. ACUTE LUNG INJURY: Maintain ventilation and oxygenation and evaluate with frequent arterial blood gases and/or pulse oximetry monitoring. Early use of PEEP and mechanical ventilation may be needed.
DERMAL EXPOSURE - EYE EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility.
ORAL EXPOSURE - Because of the potential for gastrointestinal tract irritation, DO NOT induce emesis. DILUTION: If no respiratory compromise is present, administer milk or water as soon as possible after ingestion. Dilution may only be helpful if performed in the first seconds to minutes after ingestion. The ideal amount is unknown; no more than 8 ounces (240 mL) in adults and 4 ounces (120 mL) in children is recommended to minimize the risk of vomiting.

-HANDLING AND STORAGE
SUMMARY
Hexamethyldisilazane is a flammable liquid, and a suspected human carcinogen. It is moderately toxic by ingestion and intraperitoneal routes (AAR, 2000; (Lewis, 2000). Exposure can cause severe burns to the eyes and skin irritation (Budavari, 1996). Respiratory tract irritation has also been reported after occupational exposure (OSHA , 1995).
HANDLING
- When working with hexamethyldisilazane, wear appropriate protective clothing, boots, gloves, and face/eye protection (AAR, 2000).
- Do not handle containers that are broken unless wearing appropriate protective gear (AAR, 2000).
STORAGE

Hexamethyldisilazane reacts slowly with water (Budavari, 1996). It can react vigorously with oxidizing materials (Lewis, 2000).

- Wear approved respirator, gloves, boots, apron and face shield with goggles when working with hexamethyldisilazane. A full-body impermeable suit is recommended if exposure could occur to a large percentage of the body (Anon, 1997).

EYE/FACE PROTECTION
- Chemical splash goggles and face shield (eight inch minimum) should be worn when working with hexamethyldisilazane. Consult OSHA regulations to find information on the specific types of safety glasses permitted (Anon, 1998).

POTENTIAL FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARDS - EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK, GUIDE 128 (ERG, 2004) HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Those substances designated with a "P" may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water. Substance may be transported hot. If molten aluminum is involved, refer to GUIDE 169.
Hexamethyldisilazane is a flammable liquid and represents a moderate fire risk (Lewis, 1997). When exposed to heat or flame, hexamethyldisilazane is a dangerous fire hazard (Lewis, 2000).

Hexamethyldisilazane has a flash point of 57.2 degrees F (Lewis, 2000). Hexamethyldisilazane is flammable, and poses a dangerous fire hazard when exposed to heat or flame (Lewis, 2000).

Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn.

- Carbon dioxide, dry chemical or foam can be used to extinguish hexamethyldisilazane fires (Anon, 1998).
When heated to decomposition, hexamethyldisilazane emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxide (AAR, 2000; (Lewis, 2000). Its vapors are heavier than air and will collect along low areas (AAR, 2000).
EXPLOSION HAZARD
- Hexamethyldisilazane exploded at an electronics plant as an employee was pouring it from one 55 gallon drum into another. The man died after receiving third degree burns to 52 percent of his body (OSHA , 1985).
DUST/VAPOR HAZARD
- In laboratory animals, inhalation of hexamethyldisilazane vapors caused respiratory depression (RTECS , 2001).
- Hexamethyldisilazane exposure occurred at a microelectrics plant when a valve was left open on a photoresist machine, allowing two and a half gallons of the chemical to spill onto the floor. The fumes spread up through the grated floor and several workers immediately complained of an odor and irritation to their eyes and respiratory tracts (OSHA , 1995).
REACTIVITY HAZARD
- Hexamethyldisilazane can react vigorously with oxidizing materials (Lewis, 2000).
- It is reactive with methanol, and reacts slowly in water (Budavari, 1996; Lewis, 1997).
