USES/FORMS/SOURCES
Graphite may be used in lubricants, polishing compounds, pigments, paints and coatings, pencils, explosives and matches, electric motor/generator brushes, electrodes, and batteries. It can be found in brake linings, bearings, graphite cement, and lining cathode ray tubes. Graphite may be used in nuclear reactors as moderators and also in fuel rods. It is an ingredient in steel and is also used in crucibles, molds and furnaces because of its high melting point (ACGIH, 1991; Ashford, 1994; Budavari, 1996) Lewis, 1993).
Graphite is crystallized carbon that can be produced synthetically or mined in its natural form. Natural graphite is mined and can be processed into lump, dust, or flake forms. Synthetic graphite is produced by heating petroleum coke or coal and can be formed into powder, crystals, rods, plates, flakes or fibers (ACGIH, 1991; Ashford, 1994; Budavari, 1996) Lewis, 1993).
SYNONYM EXPLANATION
- This document covers synthetic and natural graphite (CAS 7782-42-5) which is a microcrystalline form of carbon. The fiber form of graphite and other common forms of carbon (CAS 7440-44-0) are not included.
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Graphite pneumoconiosis may result from exposure to natural graphite dust. Symptoms may include headache, cough, dyspnea, black sputum, decreased pulmonary function, and lung fibrosis; pleural thickening, pneumothorax, and hydrothorax may occur. As a foreign body, graphite may be slightly irritating to the eyes.

Fire may produce irritating and/or toxic gases. Contact may cause burns to skin and eyes. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
- The major route of occupational exposure to graphite is inhalation (Hathaway et al, 1991).
- At the time of this review, no acute exposure studies were found for graphite in humans or experimental animals, but it is assumed to be an eye, nose, and respiratory tract irritant from frictional action.
- Synthetic graphite is thought to be a biologically inert nuisance dust (Hathaway et al, 1991).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Graphite dust can cause a particular form of pneumoconiosis called GRAPHITOSIS, which can be either simple or progressive even after removal from exposure and is disabling (ILO, 1983; ACGIH, 1992). Graphite pneumoconiosis resembles coal workers' pneumoconiosis (ACGIH, 1992). Respirable particles of graphite are retained in the lungs and bronchi (Naeye, 1971).
- After many years of exposure, shortness of breath, cough (Ranasinha & Uragoda, 1972), black sputum (NIOSH/OSHA), and radiological findings of pulmonary fibrosis (Anon, 1977) with areas of necrosis and cavitation develop (Jaffe, 1951).
- Headaches, depression, and decreased appetite have also been noted with chronic exposure (ILO, 1983).
- Graphite acts synergistically with SILICA to cause pneumoconiosis (ILO, 1983), and most of the recorded cases of graphite pneumoconiosis have involved mixed exposures to these two substances (Hanoa, 1983). The pneumoconiosis caused by graphite is distinct from that of silica, however, in that there does not seem to be an increased risk for tuberculosis in graphitosis (ILO, 1983). Graphite pneumoconiosis has occurred mainly in graphite miners and electroplaters (Gaensler, 1966). Graphite pneumoconiosis is due primarily to the natural form, but there have been rare reports of pulmonary injury from exposure to synthetic graphite (Hathaway et al, 1991).
- In an unusual case, graphite deposits were found in the synovial fluid around the knee in a worker exposed to graphite (Bellamy & Wood, 1978), indicating that systemic uptake and distribution may occur.
- The effects of graphite pneumoconiosis have been reviewed (Hanoa, 1983; Naeye, 1971).
- Overall mortality was slightly increased in a group of 901 Swedish graphite electrode workers, mainly because of "external" causes (Gustavsson et al, 1995).

SUMMARY

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Removal of solidified molten material from skin requires medical assistance. Keep victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.
FIRST AID GENERAL - INHALATION EXPOSURE - INHALATION: Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with an inhaled beta2-adrenergic agonist. Consider systemic corticosteroids in patients with significant bronchospasm. If bronchospasm and wheezing occur, consider treatment with inhaled sympathomimetic agents.
DERMAL EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contaminated clothing and jewelry and place them in plastic bags. Wash exposed areas with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes with gentle sponging to avoid skin breakdown. A physician may need to examine the area if irritation or pain persists (Burgess et al, 1999). Treat dermal irritation or burns with standard topical therapy. Patients developing dermal hypersensitivity reactions may require treatment with systemic or topical corticosteroids or antihistamines.
EYE EXPOSURE - DECONTAMINATION: Remove contact lenses and irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, the patient should be seen in a healthcare facility.

- Graphite is chemically inert in contact with skin and eyes, but workers should wear safety glasses or goggles to prevent possible mechanical irritation. Persons working with or exposed to graphite should also be provided with dust masks or other appropriate respiratory protection, since respiratory exposure can lead to disease (Grant, 1993; ITI, 1995; Sittig, 1991).

Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire.

EXPLOSION HAZARD
- Graphite in dust or powder form may pose an explosion hazard (ITI, 1995; Urben, 1995). Explosions have occurred from trying to extinguish potassium fires with graphite. If graphite contacts liquid potassium, rubidium, or caesium at 300 degrees C, intercalation compounds may be formed. These compounds may explode on contact with water or ignite in air (Urben, 1995). Graphite can burst into flames in contact with chlorine trifluoride (NFPA, 1994)

- Graphite in dust or powder form may pose a hazard from explosion. If ground to sub-micron sizes, graphite may ignite spontaneously in air (ITI, 1995; Urben, 1995).
REACTIVITY HAZARD
- If ground to sub-micron sizes, graphite may ignite spontaneously in air. Graphite reacts vigorously with liquid potassium, potassium peroxide and will ignite with chlorine trifluoride and fluorine (ITI, 1995; Sittig, 1991; Urben, 1995). If graphite contacts liquid potassium, rubidium, or caesium at 300 degrees C, intercalation compounds may be formed. These compounds may explode on contact with water or ignite in air (Urben, 1995).
