It is used as a reducing agent, an adsorbent in ingestion poisonings, as a clarifying, deodorizing, and decoloring agent, as a filtration agent, and for water purification treatment (HSDB). This review specifically discusses toxicological studies on activated carbon, as distinct from those on CARBON BLACK, COAL DUST, or GRAPHITE.

Fire may produce irritating and/or toxic gases. Contact may cause burns to skin and eyes. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution.
ACUTE CLINICAL EFFECTS
Activated carbon dust is a mild respiratory tract irritant (HSDB). Because it can bind other substances strongly, it might facilitate the uptake of other substances into the lung. It would also be expected to be a mild eye irritant and possibly a skin irritant from mechanical action. Adult respiratory distress syndrome developed in a patient after accidental instillation of activated charcoal into the lung during treatment of a drug overdose; the patient recovered after bronchoscopic removal of the charcoal (Harris & Filandrinos, 1993).
CHRONIC CLINICAL EFFECTS
Chronic skin exposure can result in clogging of the hair follicles, rendering them black. Chronic inhalation can cause carbon particles to accumulate in the lung. There is a distinct pneumoconiosis called BLACK LUNG DISEASE or COAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS, but no evidence was found for the equivalent of coal workers' lung with occupational exposure to activated carbon.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Removal of solidified molten material from skin requires medical assistance. Keep victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire.
