It is used as a solvent, liquid gauge fluid, ore flotation agent, catalyst, polymer additive, and microscopic refractive index liquid (Budavari, 1989; HSDB , 1994; Lewis, 1993).
Acetylene tetrabromide is available as a technical grade material (Budavari, 1989; HSDB , 1994; Lewis, 1993).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Acetylene tetrabromide is used as a catalyst, solvent, and ore flotation agent. Reports of human exposure are limited, and no reports of human fatalities were found at the time of this review.
- Acute overexposure can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and upper respiratory tract, nausea and vomiting, CNS depression, anorexia, liver and kidney damage, and monocytosis.
- Acetylene tetrabromide has induced pulmonary edema and fatty degeneration of the liver in several experimental species. Forestomach and benign lung tumors have occurred in mice exposed by the dermal route.

Inhalation of vapors or dust is extremely irritating. May cause burning of eyes and flow of tears. May cause coughing, difficult breathing and nausea. Brief exposure effects last only a few minutes. Exposure in an enclosed area may be very harmful. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.

FIRST AID AND PREHOSPITAL TREATMENT
DILUTION: If no respiratory compromise is present, administer milk or water as soon as possible after ingestion. Dilution may only be helpful if performed in the first seconds to minutes after ingestion. The ideal amount is unknown; no more than 8 ounces (240 mL) in adults and 4 ounces (120 mL) in children is recommended to minimize the risk of vomiting (Caravati, 2004).

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects should disappear after individual has been exposed to fresh air for approximately 10 minutes. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

MAXIMUM TOLERATED EXPOSURE
The maximum tolerated human exposure to this agent has not been delineated. Concentrations greater than 1 to 2 ppm have an objectionable odor (Hathaway et al, 1991). Life-threatening liver toxicity developed after inhalation of acetylene tetrabromide vapors for approximately 7.5 hours in one case (Van Haaften, 1969). The threshold for harmful effects in humans is not known.
ETHANOL lowered the intraperitoneal LD50 by a factor of 3.4 in mice, from 443.3 mg/kg to 128.2 mg/kg (Wolff, 1982). No deaths were seen in rats exposed to near saturated vapors for up to 3 hours, in similarly exposed rabbits for up to 2.5 hours, or in similarly exposed guinea pigs for up to 0.5 hour (HSDB, 1995). Rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and a monkey exposed to an airborne concentration of 14 ppm for 7 hours per day for up to 106 days had no fatalities (Hathaway et al, 1991). NOEL for rats, rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, and a monkey exposed for 108 days was 1 ppm (Hathaway et al, 1991).

Approach release from upwind. Stop the leak if it can be done without inordinate risk. Use an appropriate foam to cover the release as well as to suppress vapors. Control runoff and isolate the discharged compound. Absorb in noncombustible material for disposal (NFPA, 1991). The area of the spill should be ventilated. The spilled material should be collected for reclamation or absorbed in vermiculite, dry sand, earth, or like material and disposed of in a sanitary landfill (HSDB , 1994). OTHER Acetylene tetrabromide's high vapor density makes it likely that released vapors would remain close to the ground (HSDB , 1994). No data could be found on the adsorption of acetylene tetrabromide to soil. Moderate adsorption to soil is expected based upon a regression equation relating water solubility to Koc (HSDB , 1994). Based on this compound's moderate volitility it is expected to evaporate slowly from soil and surfaces (HSDB , 1994).
ABIOTIC DEGRADATION
- This compound is unreactive towards ozone, the alkyl peroxy radical, and the hydroxyl radical (HSDB , 1994).
