USES/FORMS/SOURCES
Cycloheximide is a foliar fungicide used to control powdery mildew on ornamentals, rusts and leaf spot diseases on lawns, and as a growth regulator on citrus fruit and olives (Hartley & Kidd, 1987). Cycloheximide is used in agriculture and has no antibacterial activity. It acts by inhibiting protein synthesis. It is used as a fungicide and plant growth regulator (Budavari, 1989; Gosselin et al, 1984). Cycloheximide is used as a fungicide, pesticide, antibiotic, medication in cancer therapy, plant growth regulator and protein synthesis inhibitor. It is also used for the abscission of citrus fruit in harvesting, and for turf disease control (Budavari, 1989; Sax & Lewis, 1987; Sax & Lewis, 1989; EPA, 1985). Cycloheximide is extremely repellent to rats (Budavari, 1989) and has been investigated as a rodent repellent (HSDB , 1991). Cycloheximide is used in laboratory media as a selective agent to permit isolation of pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi from sputa and feces which may contain other fungi (HSDB , 1991).
Cycloheximide is marketed under the trade name of Actidione by the Upjohn Company. It is available in two of their agricultural products, Acti-Dione RZ and Acti-Dione Thiram. Cycloheximide is an antibiotic substance obtained from the beers of streptomycin-producing strains of Streptomyces griseus (Budavari, 1989).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Cycloheximide is a potent irritant. When ingested gastrointestinal symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, melena, and excessive salivation have been reported. Other signs of poisoning are transient CNS excitement and tremors. Cycloheximide is irritating to the skin.

TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

Humans with fungal disease have tolerated 30 milligrams 4 times a day intramuscularly and 180 milligrams/day intravenously. Orally, 10 milligram single doses regularly cause intense nausea in adults.

Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.

REACTIVITY HAZARD
- When heated to decomposition, cycloheximide emits toxic fumes of oxides of nitrogen (Sax & Lewis, 1989).
- Cycloheximide is relatively heat-stable and acid-stable. It is destroyed by boiling in aqueous solution at pH 7 for 1 hour, but shows no loss of activity after 15 minutes of boiling. At pH 2, cycloheximide is not destroyed by boiling for 1 hour (Budavari, 1989).
- Cycloheximide is rapidly inactivated at room temperature by dilute alkali with the formation of the volatile, fragrant ketone, 2,4-dimethylcyclohexanone (Budavari, 1989).

Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible.
In situ amelioration (OHM/TADS , 1991): Contain and isolate spill to limit spread. Construct clay/bentonite swale to divert uncontaminated portion of watershed around contaminated portion. Isolation procedures include construction of bentonite, polyethylene-lined dams, interceptor trenches, or impoundments. Conduct bench-scale and pilot-scale tests prior to decontamination program implementation. Solids may be removed in settling basins. Treatment alternatives for diluted contaminated waters include powdered activated carbon sorption, granular activated carbon filtration, and impoundment in a lined pit with leachate collection system and domed cover. Treatment alternatives for contaminated soils include well point collection and treatment of leachates as for contaminated water; bentonite/cement ground injection to immobilize spill, physical removal of immobilized residues, and placement in a lined pit with leachate collection system and domed cover. Contaminated soil residues may be packaged for disposal.
