Copper monochloride is used as a catalyst for organic reactions; as a catalyst, decolorizer and desulfuring agent in the petroleum industry; in denitration of cellulose; as a condensing agent for soaps, fats and oils; and in gas analysis to absorb carbon monoxide (Budavari, 1989).
-CLINICAL EFFECTS
GENERAL CLINICAL EFFECTS
- Copper monochloride is poisonous by ingestion and subcutaneous routes.
- The following clinical effects are for COPPER COMPOUNDS in general.
Acute ingestion of as little as 250 mg of copper sulfate generally results in prompt gastrointestinal irritation and associated emesis. Hepatic and renal injury may occur. Inhalation of copper dust or fumes may produce a chemical pneumonitis and burns. Copper can be absorbed by inhalation and result in systemic toxicity. Copper may be absorbed through the skin.

TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. Absorb or cover with dry earth, sand or other non-combustible material and transfer to containers. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS - LAND SPILL (AAR, 1987) Dig a pit, pond, lagoon, or holding area to contain liquid or solid material. Cover solids with a plastic sheet to prevent dissolving in rain or fire fighting water.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS - WATER SPILL (AAR, 1987) Neutralize with agricultural lime (CaO), crushed limestone (CaCO3), or sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). Adjust pH to neutral (pH = 7). Use mechanical dredges or lifts to remove immobilized masses of pollutants and precipitates.
BIOREMEDIATION: Bacterial biomass, generated by growing Bacillus circulans in liquid medium containing glucose as the carbon source, was used to remove copper ions from an aqueous solution. A concentration of about 1.50 grams of biomass (dry weight) per liter removed 80% of the copper from solution containing 495 ppm, respectively. It was found that pH has a pronounced effect on the capacity of the organism to accumulate metal (Sahoo et al, 1992).

POLLUTION HAZARD
- LAKE ONTARIO: Copper was found at a level of 396 mcg/g in the nepheloid layer in Lake Ontario. The results of this study suggest that the nepheloid layer is an important medium in accumulation, recycle, and transport of contaminants in Lake Ontario (Mudroch & Mudroch, 1992).

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICITY
- FLOUNDER: Juvenile flounder (paralichthys spp.) were exposed to different activities of copper ions for 14 days to test the effect of cupric ion activity on calcium accumulation. Calcium accumulation decreased significantly with increased copper ion activity, and accumulation increased when the flounder were place back into seawater of lower copper ion activity. The study demonstrated non-lethal effects on flounder at copper ion concentrations two to three orders of magnitude lower than lethal concentrations (Dodoo et al, 1992).

- Copper monochloride is a white crystalline powder or cubic crystals (zinc-blende structure) (Budavari, 1989).
- In nature it occurs as the mineral, nantokite (colorless to grey cubic crystals) (Budavari, 1989).
- It is stable to air and light if dry, but in the presence of moisture, it turns green on exposure to air and blue to brown on exposure to light (Budavari, 1989).
